Im confused :S

Ive been given some details to put into someones account, but im like "AHHHH". I thougth i could have done it with my Bank [Halifax] but it looks like his details arent the same as the sites...

Details he gave me was like

Owner [Him]
Bank [Bank]
IBAN [Wtf?]
Swift (BIC) [Not a clue!]

Uhm. Yeah. so what do i do to transfer funds? And how long does it take?

That's an international bank transfer (the giveaway is the Swift number, which is the international banking system), I doubt you'll be able to do it online. You'll have to go to a branch. Last time I did one it cost ~£30, it was a while ago though, so it may be cheaper now.

you go into a bank, ask for either a european bank transfer form or a international one, write down your detials, and the account you are sending money to in thier bank sort code, acc,swit,iban etc numbers. write which country its heading to and what currency the money needs to be transfered as.

a few things that must be done

use Black inked pen
write in blocked Capitals
do NOT bend the form as banks use secure fax machines which hate creased papers also take some ID with drivers license if you have photo one or the old paper one and passport

the forms them shelves have instructions adn info on the back as well

I managed to call through to the bank earlier, and did it over the phone... Unsure if its right though, the next few days we shall see

if you are doing a transfer outside of the country then the banks require the IBAN (International Bank Account Number?) and the Swift Code.

The IBAN (example shown below) can be broken down as follows:
GB75 LOYD 123456 78901234

Country Code& check digits = GB75
Bank Name = LOYD
Sort Code = 12 34 56
Account number = 78901234

So you can pick his sort code and account number from the IBAN so you can use that to do the payment online if its a local bank. if its outside the UK then you will have to go into the bank/call them.


The Swift code or BIC (Bank identifier Code) is used to uniquely identifying your bank. Each bank has its own BIC code.

I'm sure I read recently that it somehow came out that the US Intelligence Agencies have insisted on copies of all international transfers using Swift so Big Brother is watching...

Yeah, I think the CIA demanded international wire records from SWIFT to help them catch terrorists, which they claim helped them hunt for the Bali bombers:

I think the records included 2 (could be 4) million transactions from the UK.
