When i first got XP, it was great. but now my sytem is slowly slowly becoming unstable, also i turned on view hidden files, and my restore points are taking up 1.25gbs od HD space :eek6:

FuR - turn off system restore. You can also clean up 250 Meg by deleting previous OS files (if you used update).

And then use a Ghost program instead of Restore. Keep it on a nice CD-R or hidden somewhere :p

Which of W2k or WME still runs DOS at startup? Either/or/any?

if either, then it's ME, cause NT/2k/XP doesn't have DOS :)

Yeah, I knew one of them had it... I don't think I could trust any operating system without DOS :)

It's the underlying DOS subsystem of the 9x OS's that make them so unstable

Really?

I thought it was useful as a backup...say if Windows were eaten alive by a virus, there'd always be DOS to format your HD from, I thought... don't quote me on that.

Oh yea peeps, god help ya if you want to install XP more than 3 times!!! Cos MS only lets you install it three times!!! I like to do a clean install every time I add new hardware, with XP I was Fecked :upyours:

Windows was just slapped over the top of DOS, earlier versions didn't try and hide it but from 95, 98, ME they tried to get away from it as much as possible. Bits of DOS were still going right through Windows making it unstable, esp in memory management.

I disagree, as DOS is the most stable operating system I have ever used.

DOS itself never locked up, as there was nothing in it to lock up :)

True but the combination of 16/32 bit didn't go down well and caused problems.

I've never used it but from the reviews, they say its the best windows yet. But loads of people said they had major problems with it, which detured me from buying it in the end. I am quite content with my Windows 98 SE

Nah XP is lovely, all the stability of 2K, with all the lovely looks 2K lacked.

|As for the 3X install limit...I think thats a bit much. Is this true? Or is it that you have to contact them instead of authorising over the net?

Feck that, get a warezed copy, or a hack for the legit copy that does away with activation. M$ deserve to have XP warezed on that 1 point alone.

And it's more than 3 times in 120 days (4 months), not 3 times total. Can't see many people hitting that limit tbh, cos if you have to reinstall windows every 5 weeks something is seriously wrong with your system.

Either that or you're a hardware installation phr34k.

:)

Correct SAR. But if you change hardware 3 x and clean install it after every upgrade you are fecked!!!! thats what I meant

I believe u can phone MS and plead your case! But F**K that, hack it man. :)

Friend of mine upgraded PC.

result - XP won't boot. Phoned Microsoft, they said that you cannot change the hardware (MOBO), as XP uses this to generate auth keys. If it changes, XP shagged - you have to re-install.

He told Microsoft that he did upgrades a lot - they said

Don't use XP!!

My advice - stick with 2k.

I Will be trying out Linux soon, if I don't have any major problems, I will move over to that.
