Maybe, but I've had no probs with 98. I use all the latest drivers anyway so slightly updated ones are of no benefit either.

It's not just updated driver Wij, it's a whole bunch of core operating issues that are resolved, but if you use the Windows Update facility regularly then all the issues are fixed anyway

Been running 98se without a reformat for 1 and a bit years, still works fine and is reasonably stable.

Me is happy enuff not to use owt else :D

No it is actually a fact. Everyone I know who works in a systems management department, gave replacing NT4 with 2k a big thumbs down, purely due to stability. They found crashes much much easier to recover in NT4.

I've read that system managers use that as an excuse not to upgrade ;)

Well since NT4 has been given the service pack treatment 6 times now thats not surprising. If you can find me a single systems manager who can justify the above opinion when Win2k SP6 is out I'll have a heart attack.

No, they're right. NT4 is superior for stability. I'm currently testing Win2000 for ABN AMRO North America (the Mortgage division). So far, I see no reason to switch to 2000 other than M$ dropping support for it. I can't write to a floppy or SCSI Zip drive without the machine crashing hard and rebooting ansd Exlorer hangs and locks up the machine from time to time (especially when accessing network shares). Explorer's stability (the Win32 shell) got so bad that I replaced it with LiteStep. My NT4 machine never crashes, and that's with a near Linux-like uptime of 50+ days. I have to reboot 2000 every day.

Our network crew is also testing 2000, the only reason they like it is because now we can play more games. I doubt if we switch.

Stability wise, you still can't beat a Linux/FreeBSD machine. My Linux laptops have been rebooted only to switch to the 2.4.2 kernel (I compiled it for both 2 weeks ago). Prior to that, they hadn't been rebooted since December.

Goes to show : if you know what you're on about, you will be fine with it. Those who are patient with their windows 98 will find it serves their purpose fine without need to upgrade to anything else. Those who upgrade to Windows 2000 without a foggiest how it works usually end up going tits up and come out saying that it's shit. Personally I find win2k more stable then my nt4 installation : but saying that, I didnt spend enough time with nt4 to warrant knowing enough about it to make it run correctly, as nt4 did not serve what I needed it to do. Windows 2000 does, it is stable, I have had it running multiple weeks at a time without any worry of stability, no slowdown, no crashes or anything. The only "crashes" as such that I've had to do with win2k was Internet Explorer, but that is expected ;)

Stick to what you know and don't moan about stuff that you dont know about.
