Guys.

Looking for some assistance from you techy gurus.

Friend of mine has Windows XP installed and has some strange happenings.

First the specs

Compaq 6140 EA Presario
Windows XP (with SP1)
Compaq 7500 monitor.
256 MB RAM
40GB WD HDD

When the PC goes to standby, everythings fine.

When it comes out of Standby, there are 2 problems :

BSOD
The BSOD appears with various blurbage included. The main details are ;

smwdm.sys Address F9C52DD7 base at F9C50000 Date stamp 3C459F68

I found that the above file smwdm is from the SOUNDMAX audo program. I uninstalled that and tried again - same error.

I then renamed all of the smwdm files on his system (replacing with .old extension) and tried again. Similar blurbage with 2 additional changes :

a. KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
and
b. win2k.sys file reported as faulty (with different address information

monitor

Occasionally the monitor refuses to come out of standby (power light stays at amber instead of starting up)

ANyone got any comments on the above from experience/knowledge?

Try disabling ACPI, and also, if it (BIOS) has APIC, try turning that off, although I understand APIC requires a reinstall.
