Guys,

Trying to reformat a neighbours PC and keep running into the same problem.

I format the HDD to NTFS
I install Windows XP Pro. The system reboots and is workable.

I then install SP SP2 and the system hangs after reporting to load file mup.sys.

Tried all I can to fix this to no avail.

Do I still with XP WITHOUT SP2, or do more to make sure it can run with SP2?

Checking about the net shows problems ranging from a hair on the AGP slot to the processors being forked.

512 MB RAM
2.6 Mhz Processor.
80 GB HDD

I'd imagine if you dont use iexplorer, ms outlook/express and use use a decent firewall (hardware if poss) + antivirus + without SP2, you'd probably be ok, security-wize.

I was raging on about the shitness of various windows updates to our IT peeps - they suggested the above...moving to firefox, using pegasus mail & that would probably be ok - nice chaps, really :D

Hi Laz

Just a quick post, which isn't very helpful, but I believe the SP2-blocking period has ended so if Auto Updates are enabled then SP2 may be downloaded whether desired or not.

Kind Regards

well, took me a looooong time :

1. Removed the modem PCI card - No joy
2. Replaced Memoery Stick. - No joy
3. Replaced HDD - no joy.
4. Replaced IDE cable - no joy
5. Reset CMOS - no joy
6. Removed the battery for CMOS - no joy.

Each of the above took AGES, cos you could only tell after installing XP

Before I threw the blooking thing out of the window, I decided to give a last go.

I d/loaded up to date BIOS for the MOBO and it only went and fecking worked!!!!
