We don't criticise cars makers for providing loads of different versions of the same car, why are you criticising MS then?

PS It's is just out of interest that I ask the above question ;)

First it was our XP ULTRA GOLDEN SAMPLE SUPER PRO EXPERT@HOME 10000 XXX BLASTOTRON graphics cards, and now it's this. Bollocks to it, I say.

Cos it takes the piss even having Home & Pro versions of XP.

Should just be 1 OS, and let the end users pick their features either on install or intra-os.

Whilst I can see the point in having stripped-down or dumbed-down versions of an OS, the major problem with MS is they strip out features that they deem unnecessary other than for "professionals".

Take two examples with XP:

(a) "Remote Assistance": you can _give_ remote assistance from XP Home, but you can't _ask_ for it, the bizarre nature of an XP Home assisting an XP Pro is possible, but not the other way round ? You'd have thought XP Home was more likely to require Remote Assistance ?!

(b) Network Passwords: cannot be saved on XP Home, so if you have a simple shared drive in the network, particularly if it is on a non-Windows machine, you have to keep typing in the user/password to access it from an XP Home user every time you re-login. You'd have thought XP Home is more likely to need network shared drives ?!

(these may have been fixed since, it's been a while since I've looked into them).

The problem is not that of having different levels of the product, but claiming the low level ones are for simple "home" users, invariably the "advanced" features that get disabled are precisely the features you need to make the product simpler to use.
