i just installed the latest windows update (with the automatic update thingy) and now every time the PC boots up i get a message saying that svchost.exe has performed an illegal operation and will be terminated, the computer then continues to load xp etc, however for some reason my sound drivers corrupt too, not noticed anything else apart from those two things happening... any idea on how to fix or am i stuck waiting for the next update to fix this one?

All windows updates should set a system restore point (assuming you're not as stupid as I am and have deleted them). Restore to the point just before the update and you should be ok. You could then try updating again and see if it happens again or if it was just a glitch.

Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

From there it's pretty straight forward assuming you remember the date/time you did the update.
