Windows opens file explorer on startup

I've suffered for ages with this and never been able to solve it. Until just now. I've looked long and hard on the internet and found lots of people with the same problem, so perhaps this post will appear in Google and help someone (including those people here).

Basically, whenever Windows 7/8/10 booted, the computer would show file explorer, my computer, whatever. I'd searched in regedit, startup programmes, all kinds of shit, to no avail. It just kept opening on startup, waiting for me to close it.

Well I found it. I must have done it in Windows to get rid of those stupid tiles. Basically, I'd created a task in "scheduled tasks" to boot directly to the desktop. I just disabled it, and no more file explorer on startup. Gone.

Hope this helps.

What was the job the scheduled task ran? Was it just "run explorer"? - which would do the job I suppose...

Was it 8.1 that added the option to boot straight to the Desktop?
