Windows Media Player Chuffing 9 Beta

Quite possibly the most annoying piece of shit I have ever installed. :eek:

I stuck it on as the official Windows Update encouraged me too. Seeing as it was even listed there I thought it must be in a pretty advanced stage of development so what the hell.

The issues I have with it are:
  • When playing video the progress bar flips back to the beginning and will not budge. The video plays as it should, but I can't skip forward or backwards. I have to watch the entire thing from start to finish or not at all.
  • When playing streaming media, WMP8 used to be pretty good at guessing how much it should download before playing so as to minimise pauses while the download catches up with the playback. Now it starts playing instantly and so judders along which leads me to...
  • When I press pause during streaming media it stops downloading. With WMP8 it would pause the playback but continue downloading the file, so I knew that I could pause a video, do something else and come back in a few seconds and the video would be ready. Not any more. I have to watch the full juddery playback or nothing.
  • The media buttons on my Logitech keyboard don't work with WMP9, for some reason.

I've played with every option imaginable and no improvements have been made.

WORST OF ALL is this. You can't uninstall it. Ever. At all. Once WMP9 is on your system there is absolutely no getting rid of it, short of reverting to a System Restore Point taken before you installed it.

Microsoft have said the WMP9 is effectively an 'OS upgrade' and so cannot be uninstalled as XP is so intricately woven around media. YOU LYING FUCKS! Service Pack 1 is pretty intricately woven round the OS, but you can still uninstall it! Now I have this shit bit of shit, I can't even put WMP8 back on.

I pine for only a few days ago when WMP8 was all I needed (apart from Winamp and PowerDVD).

Use winamp 3 + winamp2 plugins set (so logitech keys work) with the nimo codec pack instead of wmp :/

(Or mplayer2 +winamp2 if you dislike wa3)

oh & summo, the streaming thing, thats probably because "you started another gay thread!"...... j/k ;), try manually setting your connection speed, cos the auto detection is utter crap.

that should actually still be a part of wmp 9 (cos i installed it too & just kept using the mplayer2.exe)

so thats another option summo

Yes, BUT.... once you have WMP9 on you can't specifiy mplayer2 as the default media player. Even if you associate no files with WMP9 and all of them with mplayer2... Videos continue to open with WMP9.

Shatting arse. I don't like Winamp3 either. :(

I think i have wmp7, but dont some files actually not allow you to move the progress bar around, at all? I generally have no problems but I have noticed that some times i cant change the position of the bar (for example that vid of carmack showing off the d3 at the launch of the gf3). I also seem to remember that some files cause the download problems u talk about, altho typically i just download the file then run it rather than streaming it.

As some people have no problems with it, could that be the problem you are having?

I prefer the new Real Player - much, much better than the shitty bloat/nag/installshiteyoudontfuckingwant ware that I usually associate with Real

im still on wmp6 dues to 7 being utterly poo and annoying and mainly because it doesnt actually work on my win2k box

I know what you mean, but no. This problem is occuring on all video files, even ones that were fine before. These files also behave themselves in apps like RealOne Player (which is utter shite, imo) and QuickTime.

Never never never install MS betas!

Given that they are still in beta form in all but name on their final release and are always bugged to buggery
