Having a bit of an odd problem here;

I've got a Windows comp and a Linux comp connected together via a crossover cable. It's worked fine for the last few months, I've been able to access the internet from the Linux box, everything was very woo-yay.

However, this last week...
If I have the Windows comp switched on and the Linux one switched off, Windows shows the connection as being fine and dandy - but when I turn on the Linux comp, the Windows comp seems to throw a hissy fit, and it insists that the network cable is unplugged. Which means they won't talk to each other.

I'm gazzumped. It seems to have come completely out of the blue. Any ideas? :(
Windows XP + Slackware 9.1, don't have a clue about the NIC models.

check if linux and doze are using auto-detection to set the connection speed mate. my XP box *REFUSES* to let me set the connex speed manually to 100mbit/full duplex to my switch. my unix boxen on the other hand, and I almost don't want to say it.....work just perfectly. also, I've noticed that windows handles dodgy cables badly. if you've dropped something on your cat5, or have a subwoofer near it or something just reroute the cable and all should work. else replace the cable.

Heh, found the problem. After 30 minutes tinkering with various control panels and using Google's Linux search far too much, I decided to properly inspect the cable.

It seems that a certain two year old cousin of mine that was over last week liked the pretty yellow colour and decided to have a wee chew on it :p
