Windows installshield problem

The last few days when i've attempted to install anything, it does the whole starting installshield crap, lets me select typical/custom/min. or whatever, but then when the install should actually begin i get an 'installshield has performed an illegal operation' message.

Anyone know how to stop this without reinstalling windows, or maybe an alternative to installshield?

OS = XP home.

I recently had a similar error message with a friend's computer, some art program he was using, he got the error every time he tried to start the program. It turned out to be a corrupt user.ini file. Perhaps there is something on your computer that is doing a similar thing?
