Anyone had the opportunity to use or beta test this?

I may be a filthy Linux hipster, but it would be nice to know if looks like its going to be a XP/7 or more of a ME/Vista

Been using it on an RM Slate. It does seem rather well suited to a tablet however it's very early days. I suspect it might be a bit of an Me though, unfortunately. I'm not a fan of the interface (for a very good representation of it, check out BBC's beta website) but thankfully the full explorer is still available.

I was going to download and try Win8 but I've not got a spare machine that I'm prepared to lose. I've got a spare machine, but it's below the minimum specification... and it runs WinXP just fine.

I like the Metro look, but I've seen what it looks like when stuff not designed for it is forced into it, and it looks fugly.

Giving it a try at the moment, mainly because in about 2 months or so I'll be upgrading to a new processor/mobo so might as well see how it goes.

I have it running on a touch screen computer and I cant wait for he finished model to see what its like. I agree with the previous statement about apps looking like dog shit when they are not optimised.

If I don't give a crap about metro and touchscreen-ness is the core Windows experience any different or better than 7?

I've gone back to Win 7 for now, it looks fairly slick but for me it is badly disjointed until more programs and tools arrive to support the metro interface properly and then the fact I couldn't get a couple of devices to work properly for the moment kind of torpedoed it for the moment.

Don't have a spare machine that's up to spec (well, I have a netbook running win7 but I reckon Metro would kill it despite a supposedly smaller footprint), so I'm going to pass for now. Not reading encouraging things about it on teh interwebs though, at least not from credible sources like El Reg. TBH so long as it plays nice with Win7, I may just wait until I have a new tablet to buy before I think about Metro (my Galaxy Tab is 18 months old); the UI looks a bit forced to me when it comes to mouse/kb usage.

Frankly I'm more interested in performance gains than the MetroUI.

Win 7 was a massive leap forward in performance, I fear that 8 will be a "Oh hai, new interface! What you mean you no ask for, who care!" style Microsoft release in much the same vein as them taking the command line away in ME and so on.

Metro isn't going to make my games run any faster is it?

The system control seemed a bit tighter, the system seemed a tiny bit faster and IE10 certainly felt snappy.

Maybe I am mistaken but I though 8 was going to be a roll up of 7 but with a touch friendly interface?

I doubt it, last I heard it was basically a re-skinned Windows 7.

I won't bother with it myself, can't see the point really.

Tried Server 2012 today.

NO. WRONG. GTFO.

This stinks more than Millennium. But MS have already made it clear they don't give a shit re Windows 8, it's just there to try and have a pop at (the other)iOS and nothing else. But why the fuck did they have to do it to a server OS. So if anyone is that desperate to move forwards then it's time to learn server core.

This could well be the first version of Windows I don't upgrade too.

Yep server core is the way forward we have a few low level HP servers on site and they can not run server 2008 at anything more than 800x600 as they don't have the balls in the gfx department. 2012 and 8 both seem to be looks improvements more than anything you will need to have.

Very odd.
The Consumer Preview crashed my videocard (huge artifacts on the screen) when I used IE
Chrome and Firefox were ok
I have just installed the Release Preview build, I open IE and.... crash...
Chrome and Firefox are just fine in this build too.
Guessing it's the nvidia drivers...

Read bits and pieces about it. Seen that you can see have the classic interface, which is a plus, also the specs are really low so it can be installed on a wider base. Don't like the Metro UI and the focus on apps. Have to see how well it runs games new and old, before I will pass a final verdict.

Works great for me, bit of tweaking can basically turn it into normal Windows with a few bells and whistles. It's a good product, rock solid stable and whilst the new UI isn't for everyone it is going to be superb for those using touchscreens which is a massive market still showing rapid growth.
