b4 i start i should say that i have a reasonable knowledge of qw networking, i know that ping cannot fall below 1000/fps etc etc. however when playing online ive noticed some very wierd things:
- rock solid 33/34 ping with isdn using 60fps. upping the fps to 72 saw ping fall to sub-30. bizzarely 1000/60 is half the ping limited value, much as 1000/72/2 is 27fps.
- modem ping which is stable at 99/100 when using 50fps, however decreasing maxfps to 45 sees ping plummet to a fairly stable 92.
- using x-stream dialup, with 72fps my ping never drops below 39/40, yet with 66fps it falls as low as 31.
perhaps some1 could explain this to me? the relationship appears to b non-continuous, eg changing the fps a little causing minping to spike up/down by a large amount. mebbe its summat like packets are sent depending on there size, so if fps crosses certain bondaries the data is split into more/less packets? wierd, cos i thoght data was sent for every frame rendered or smt.
i can understand that with less fps, there is less data to send and hence ping could b lower. its just the way it happens which confuses me. and esp the first case i mentioned, where upping the fps from 60-72 makes ping drop from 33 to 27.

i cant help feeling that a little tweaking of my fps will cause my ping to vary greatly, if so i would like more idea how to take advantage.
