Win XP Home (SP2 RC2)
WiFi PCI Card: SMC SMC2802W v.2 (Prism Frisbee chipset, supposedly. Certainly Prism, with Nitro support).
Abit KT7a Motherboard
AMD Athlon 1.4Ghz
768MB 133Mhz SDRAM.

Right, I've finally got this sodding problem sussed out enough to ask for help:

I have an SMC SMC2802W v.2 Wi-Fi 54g PCI card. It works once connected, but I'm having big issues getting it to connect on start up.

All drivers have been updated (to the degree of even putting on SP2, which seems to have helped a little).

The "connection method" and associated problems are as follows:

1) Boot computer
2) Windows does not automatically restore the Wireless connection.
3) "View Available Wireless Networks" returns no results.
4) Load software that came with the card (this is now out of date and does not support WPA). This is able to get a list of about 4-6 Wi-Fi networks within its own interface.
5) Hit refresh in Windows interface, still nothing.
6) Quit SMC driver interface
7) Hit refresh in Windows interface, returns 4-6 results.
8) Connect to network, can't get an IP. So go to "Advanced" -> "Wireless Networks tab" (on the Network connection properties), check "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings", Wi-Fi now immediately connects up.

So, it's down to the "Use Windows to..." checkbox for my connection to work. It needs to be checked. However, on each reboot, before I run the SMC software, the "Wireless Networks" tab in the connection properties does not exist. It only appears after the software has been run (and then quit from).
When this is recovered, the "Use Windows ..." checkbox defaults to being unchecked.

Does anyone know why this happens? I've considered writing a script that would open and then kill the SMC software on startup, but I don't know if it's possible to script the checking of the "Use Windows ..." checkbox to "True" to make the connection establishment completely automatic. I don't see why this should be necessary tbh.

Help is muchos appreciated!

I don't know about XP but with ME and 98 Disabling the Ethernet card, solved my problem with connection issues.

I actually had to physically remove my old wired Ethernet card to kill a hardware conflict I was having with the Wi-Fi, so there's only one network connection in existance on my computer.
