In the past I've never needed PC help. I can fix anything usually. :(

This has me stumped.

The PC just will not fucking POST (OK - it will on rare occaisions but then still won't get to Windows.)

As you can see it just power-cycles every few seconds.

However, thinking I knew what the problem was, I've changed the PSU and the Mobo. Better, more reliable components in each case. If anything the problem is worse now. Can't even get to BIOS except on about 1 in 1,000 boots.

I have no gfx card in and am using onboard now in case that was the problem.

I've swapped the mem around several times.

The CPU is not overheating. The few times it has got to BIOS it was showing as 28C.

I've tried it with fans plugged in and without.

I've tried it with HDD and SSD plugged in and without.

What the fuck is left to try?

tbh I'd take *everything* out, and start with powering only the mobo, then add CPU, then RAM etc. good luck. watching your vid reminded me of when I burned out a couple disks.

Have you tried setting it up outside of the case so you can rule out some dodgy contact somewhere?

The mobo is new so no need to reset the BIOS. It does just the same as the old mobo did.

Will play around more tonight. The only common components that have been present all the time are CPU, fan and RAM.

Their is if it's corrupted. After that My guess is voltage issue or duff sensor causing instant power down.

You'd have to be seriously unlucky for two consecutive motherboards and power supplies to exhibit the exact same oddness.

imo the PSU is certainly trying to save you from disaster in some way.

another thought occured to me: have you had the thing on the same net circuit all this time? try moving it to another one, with fewer devices. maybe it's not drawing enough power to kick off?

OK - I've reseated everything, I'm running on only one mem stick, which I've used the onboard test to confirm is OK, I'm still on the new mobo. I've reset the BIOS on it. I've also moved to a new room with it plugged direct into the wall. Just the keyboard and monitor plugged in. No mouse.

Now, it POSTs exactly every other time. Switch it on and the first thing it does is reset itself after about 2 seconds. Then it attempts to boot again and succeeds. Every time with this configuration. I can get into the UEFI BIOS. Play with all the settings. Amend the boot order. Whatever.

However, the minute I attempt to go into Windows it gets to the splash screen and resets again.

I've tried this with my SSD which has a newish Win7 installation, an HDD that's connected with an older Win7 installation and an even older HDD that's in there with XP on it. No matter which drive I try to boot it bombs out in a couple of seconds. Same with all the associated safe modes. They won't boot.

Actually there's an old Ubuntu somewhere as well, I'll try it but don't expect it to be any different.

I can boot off the mobo CD but there's nothing useful to do from it.

I know that none of those Windows installations have the correct drivers for the new (Asus) mobo but they should still boot. Especially in Safe Mode.

And why the fuck does it still refuse to POST the first time, every time.

Something fucking weird here :/

Run as much of it outside the case as you can. You only need to connect the power button from the case.

I has a similar problem with my asus mobo. Turned out it was a dodgy dvd drive that was messing up the boot. It did appear to fail to post at times because it posts so fast.

Disconnect all drives and boot her up a few times. Fnar

I've tried it without drives. Same problem no matter which are unplugged. Still won't get into Windows with the DVD drive unplugged.

It was the same outside the case. Leaving it in for now as it's easier to lug about.

Gonna try the Ubuntu boot off the HDD. Then booting from a Peppermint OS 5 CD I have lying around.

If those don't give me any useful results I might just have to bite the bullet and buy a new Ivy Bridge i5 :/

If it was a retail CPU and not OEM (I can see the Intel HSF in the video) then you have a 3 year warranty...

You should admit your failure, it will go easier on you then.

Your need to be more specific, you might as well have told him you like shoes.
