ok, i once thought about this quite long!

why do we need a GOD to belive in.

ppl who are in hopeless situations and noone will help them, need hope... so they turn to "GOD" for help. this helps them rise theyr moral if things start to go for the better, couse they think something mighty is helping out.

so, to put this in another way, they feel better that something is watching over them and are more confident on makeing harder decisions and so on.

allso, "GOD" is allso makeing this world livable.. couse whitout fear of god this world would be i a disaster. most ppl dont kill others and rob etc, couse they are afraid of god! they dont want to go to hell when they die.

for some religions, dependant who they belive in, sets theyr way of life and evrything they do during theyr lifetime.

as im a strong ateist.... that means i dont belive in god.... this is what i came up, when thinking on the subject. i know there are alot of other reasons why ppl belive in god ofc.

PS: this is not to offend enyone, or eny religion. just thoughts of mine... how do u guys feel about it ?

heres one for you -

if jesus and all the rest did exist, and relgion is real... why do we have nothing now like a jesus come down to earth and prove it? why only 2k years ago did this happenin, before people discoverd science?
if god was real and so was jesus, surely this thing could happen all the time? nope, it stopped when everyone got a brain and thought about science for a second.

:p

One thing - Jesus did exist as such and it is documented (not just in the bible) - if he was a child of god though....I am the love-child of Jimi Hendrix and Marilyn Monroe!

I think your approach is too rational. I'm not a religious man myself, but I think that people don't believe for a reason, because faith is so much more than the rational aspect of man. Religion touches man as a whole, so I don't think it can be explained why you believe, you just do.

If you need a reason to believe in a God, it means you doubt him. What I mean with this, is that you can't believe that a god exists just because the facts prove it to you. Belief in a god is a lot different from belief in 2x2=4. You may have experienced certain things which make you believe, but these things are no hard evidence which prove you that there exists a god. It makes you belief that there is a god, independent of all proof.

To say it with the words of Dostoevsky: "A rational man doesn't come to faith through the miracle, but to the miracle through faith." I think this is correct: first comes faith and then the belief that god helps you, makes the world liveable, etc.

Good question and i'd love to answer it for you but the only thing i can think to say is that people are needy and insecure and generally believe everything theyre told, which tbh is far too cynical and bleak so i'll not say it.

You're confusing morals and religion, religions only want you to beleive that they go hand in hand... but they dont. Muslims who beat their wives maybe religious but they deffinately aren't moral... same with the Klu Klux Klan, they may be beleive what they are doing is the will of god, but it does not deem it morally correct.

This may be why some people call themselves religious, but I wouldn't consider them religious and it's certainly not why some people need to believe in a god. Religion is more than attending to religious rituals or doing what a certain 'holy' text says. Religion is an attitude towards life. There are no real reasons as to why you've taken this attitude, but you just can't not take it.

I don't believe in any deity. I do have some fear of God though since my parents instilled it in me, just a little though.

In my adult life I find myself becoming less and less of a believer in religion, I'm sorry to say. Sorry because religion can be a comfort, when contemplating why you are here in the world, and why you were even born. And where you might end up after you die.

When I was younger, I don't recall the exact age but around 20, I sort of reached a defining line when it comes to religion. Before it I didn't think much about it, afterwards I started to question it. I won't go into all the stuff I thought, but I'l tell you what I came up with...

There is no god. When we die the stuff we are made of returns to nature (ofc most of us know that).

We have no such thing as a soul. We do have a consciousness, and it deludes us into thinking that we have a soul.

When we die we seize to exist. Body and "soul".
We do return to nature though, of course.

Humans are highly evolved animals, no more no less.

I've come this far in my personal philosophizing. I might be wrong ofc. That's why I consider myself an Agnostic, I doubt most religious stuff.

it can be explained, its the fear of the unknown, when we have shitty lives, diseases, think we are in great danger or worry about death, we start to 'believe', we give ourselves (false) hope, that takes a bit of the stress and pain away because we think things will turn out fine (or at least we hope) because 'some power' will come save us or at least our souls if we happen to die...

....which is only natural, stress is bad for us, shortens our lives, and this is the way the body deals with it, its a perfect solution, just too bad for me i dont fall for it ;p

I agree. I think if I was to get a terminal illness or something I'd be praying to God. Most of us would imo, but that's not our rational minds talking. Not mine anyway. Just fear.

the need for mysticism has never come from rational thoughts

rationality and relegion have always been a contradiction

Yes, but we are not "perfectly wired" in that sense. We're rational beings but we very often act irrational :/

I think you're wrong about we're not being machines. We are imo, very complex ones. Well, I don't mean someone built us, but we are biological machines, who are just products of evolution.

However, in a not too distant future I think the machines might take over the world. Because we will soon be able to make machines that are superior to us. By soon I mean like in 50 years or so. And let's say if the machines are superior to us, why would they want us around? Scary prospects imo.

:(

What i meant was is that a machine does not suffer from feelings or needs...

First and foremost the catholic church was wrong about the present heliocentric theory, they believed in the geocentric theory, and they were so confided in this theory that they had too murder hundreds of early scientists who would later disprove them. Second of all, the story of Jesus has nearly the same elements of any other Folklore, such as Mithrus, Osiris, or even Dionises, who the hell still believes in them? Nobody, thats because people of alternative religions were able to seperate symbology from reality. When the president says I plan to appoint common sense judges who know that our rights are derrived from god, someone in the whitehouse press should be able to stand up and say how is that different from saying your going to appoint common sense judges who know that our rights are derrived from Zeus? The modern christian Bible is no more significant than The Illiad or The Odyssey.

For thousands of years humanity has been obsessed with blood sacrifice. Is it an accident, that the story of the crucifiction of Jesus gave christians a suffering hero, whose flesh they could eat? Whose blood they could drink? For many chrisitians the passion of the christ was the single most powerful experience of there lives. When it comes to jesus movies, this movie is far and away the NUMBER ONE CHOICE among christians.

*adjusted for inflation

Horny Jesus - Last Temptation of the Christ - $13 million
Singing Jesus - Jesus Christ Superstar - $55 million
Bloody Jesus - Passion of the Christ - $370 million and counting.

In fact if you were to go through this film minute by minute, and make a note everytime there is blood, violence, or suffering depicted on screen it would look like this. the first ten minutes go by without much gore. but for the remaining 109 minutes of the film, only 6 minutes go by without any blood, violence, or suffering. Any film represents hundreds or thousands of individual decisions made by the director, mel gibson could have made this movie anyway he wanted too, and he chose to make it this way. He was obviously right, because christians said YES, this is the film we want.

Ever notice what a bad wrap the inquisition gets? Even some christians today, think it was a bad idea. How could it be a bad idea? If the bible is right aren't the stakes as high as they can be? If a little suffering here on earth saves more souls for all eternity isn't that a good thing? The inquisition was not perversion of christian doctrine. The inquisition was an expression of christian doctrine.

Even if your not a fundamental extremist christian but still consider yourself a christian, then what the hell is moderate christianity? Jesus is only sort of the son of god? He only somewhat rose from the dead? Your eternal soul is at stake, but you shouldn't make a big deal out of it? Moderate christianity makes no sense. Is it any wonder that so many people choose the christian leaders who actually have the courage of there convictions?

Theselonians 4:16-17, the rapture, otherwise known as when jesus christ comes back to earth and takes back his church, to heaven, the church being all the people who are believers in him, not the buildings. 22% percent of Americans claim to be certain that the rapture will occur sometime before the end of there life, another 22% believe that it will happen sometime in the next 50 years. Now when you unpack what that conviction entails, it is perfectly maladaptive to planning a sustainable future for the human race. Its also maladaptive when it comes to avoiding global conflict because the likes of these prophecies indicate that global war is a precursor to the return of jesus. Its really not an exaggeration to say that there is some significant percentage of the american electorate which if they turned on there television today and saw that a mushroom cloud has replaced jerusalem, they would see a silver lining of hope in that cloud. These people elect our presidents and our congressman, which is a terribly dangerous state of affairs.

Doubtless? Jesus was a great guy, he'd forgive you for anything lieing, murder, internet pornography, ANYTHING. He'd even forgive you, for speaking against Jesus himself. Apparently to make things interesting there is ONE extra rule. There actually is one unforgivable sin. Denial of the holy spirit, if you do that, you are eternally damned. It says so right there in the bible TWICE (Luke 12:10, Mark 3:29). Its a doublly infallable rule, Deny the holy spirit and you can never EVER go anywhere, but hell. As luck would have it the holy spirit is the easiest thing in the entire doctrine to doubt. God is out of reach, Jesus was 2,000 years ago, but the holy spirit is with you right here right now. So you better REALLY actually feel the holy spirit. You can't deny it in your thoughts because Jesus, IS IN your thoughts. If your mind starts to wander, to the fact that theres no more evidence for the existence for this holy spirit than there is evidence for the existence of unicorns. Then, do you know what you have done!? The GREATEST crime in fundamentalist christianity, is to think.

In conclusion, if i had to sit in heaven forever, knowning that there are these people, millions and billions of people suffering eternal torments, and there is nothing i could do for them. That is Hell.

So, where can i find salvation?

I don't believe in discussions about religions.

It gets you nowhere, it changes nothing and people should learn to leave other people the f*ck alone.

We don't need to all...just get long, we need to learn how to keep to ourselves.

EDIT:

I reason I started posting FH was because I left my computer on, as I was downloading stuff. Just before I left the house I was browsing FH, and it was still up on my computer.
