Why is my TV not working?

Ok time for some seriousness in OT

Last year (in halls at uni) i used a freeview USB box to watch tv through my laptop. Worked fine, no problems. Used an external lead to plug box into aerial socket, perfect reception.

Moved into a house last week, set it all up. Plugged the aerial lead into my freeview box (different lead to one above, this one comes out the wall directly, no socket to plug it into). Open the freeview program, no signal whatsoever.

I don't see the point in me buying a TV as i have a monitor already here for my 360 and don't know how i'd go about running tv through it (though it may be possible, i don't actually know).

So the question is, why is my aerial not picking up any signal whatsoever? :p

Maybe the house doesn't have freeview? You might not have come accross such things, but these types of houses do exist! Tried it in any other room? Does anyone else get freeview? Have you tried terrestrial? Is the aerial on your roof pointing towards a digital receiver?

The freeview is in the usb box. So it's just like a freeview receiver for a TV i assume - given that theres like 20 thousand students in Portsmouth i'd assume i'd be able to get freeview here.

Fuck knows about the aerial on the roof though, my housemate has a working tv in her room so i'd assume that rules that out?

that wont matter really, only thing that will make a difference is the position of the aerial. Freeview needs to have the aerial facing an exact way, terrestrial has less of a direct position

Well it'll make it a bit easier to tell whether he actually has digital in his house or it's just his tv or the wire to his room messing up.

God your a tit :(, the Aerial might be analog, the aerial might not be in the right place and you might not be able to get freeview.

Freeview - Welcome to free TV land

Postcode says i can get freeview.

Also - just been up in the loft. The aerial's up there and is pretty much inaccesible. Although i'm not sure how much that matters though as i tried my housemates tv downstairs on this aerial, didn't work. But when i tried my box up on her aerial it didn't work either :s

Fun fun fun :(

You need to look at other peoples aerials and see if there facing the same way as yours, ask your neighbour if he gets freeview. If he does look at the aerial then try and match his direction.(This involves getting on the roof ofc) Guess theres a webby somewhere which will show you what signal towers are digitally activated. The one near me got turned off a few months back for some reason it hasn't come back on :( same might have happened where you are

My housemate had no trouble getting terrestrial in her room, but had a problem getting freeview.

This could explain why my box doesn't work on her aerial - but doesn't explain why her tv didn't work on my aerial socket.

Can't do it with the one in my room - the lead goes into the wall. Checked my housemates one, took them apart and couldn't see anything different. Tried my other lead and nothing.

Ok, so you can't get freeview anywhere in your house. Thats either the web-site lying to you and you can't get it after all, or your aerials not facing the right way. So you'll have to talk to the other neighbours(not someone in the same house that has the same aerial as you) if they get freeview, if they do. Check out the direction of both yours and theres.

Next problem is what sounds like lead to your room isn't connected, so trace it to where it goes and fix it.

If you can't be bothered, get the bloke who owns the place to fix it

some parts of Bath dont have it (i presume its becuase we still live in the georgian times, what what)

and canterbury wont completely get it until 2010...
fucks sake. stuck with terrestrial tv or paying 30+ a month for sky

The aerial will be standard and will pick up the signal regardless.[/quote]And you seen and inspected that aerial have you? There are digital and analog aerials and obviously if it’s not digital it won't work with free view.

we have an arial that was here before the freeview craze took off, works for us.

if tv doesnt work on your arial socket, your socket is owned.

Check to make sure you're not watching the microwave oven.
