7,000 is noit a lot of debt these days.

you must take into account there is conditions that need to be met before you even pay it back. its not a basic bank loan where you must pay x amount untill its cleared.

for example look at this - if you earn 1200 a month you only pay back £1 a month on your loan. this scales up accordingly to the wage brackets.

atm im working 48 hours a week at minimum wage and i dont even get 1200 a month. so assuming i leave uni and end up in a shit job like that im hardly losing out am i? £12 a year!

Totally agree with you Tris, to many people going to uni to just get their folks off their backs for another 3-4 years.

i just think personally if a degree will help society it should cost less than these fun degrees like surfing, drama and how to write a book. these types of course should cost more to compensate for how useless they are.

but ofcourse, what is useful is totally subjective so who can say whats what.

Wish I could skip University but it doesn't seem to be any way to do it in Sweden, we have far too high education level overall so the demands for even the simplest jobs goes up, I got denied a job at a PC store, as a guy who sold spare parts and put together/repaired PC's because I didn't have relevant work experience or a Uni degree, this after proving the staff and the guy owning the place I knew more about what the fuck they were doing than they actually were.

O well, going back to school in the fall to spend 6 fucking months fixing my degrees due to some **** arabic teacher who couldn't speak English or Swedish -.-

I guess I could move to Britain and get a job at PC World, problem is I kinda like the "practically 0% chance of getting mugged/stabbed" Sweden has, and the 1 stabbing every 5 seconds in for example Glasgow isn't exactly inviting.

you will regret moving to britain if you did.

theres probably better places in europe and since you can go anywhere, why anyone would choose britain is beyond me.

I start Uni in september, doing a Database Technology degree. That's going to be 9.5k debt over the 3 years (maintence shite maybe jumps it to 15k, unless I've read it wrong) - That'll involve 1 job inbetween (1 year experience in a proper job, plus any sort of POS job I get while there) - Then there's the whole "Do I want to go for a masters?" which, if I do, is a 2nd years work experience. (Would use it to pay off the master's loan first tbh)

It gets expansive, but, if you're lucky, it's hella worth it.. Plus it's nice to say you have a degree of two ;)

Unlike alot of people I know, I'm going for the degree/knowledge, not to get away from my parent (Granted, it's half way across the country..)

It gets expansive

but does it though?

if you look at the student loan deduction tables from revenue and customs you can clearly see you day pay THAT much back each month.

you could even live on the line for a few months when youre working propley and pay it off quicker.

Nah, not how I meant it Tris. I mean, from alot of my friends PoV the debt is really scary, but considering all the loan repayment amounts it really isn't that bad. I mean, I know I'll pay it back eventually. But people look at it in black and white "OMG! 10K+ loan by the time you're 20! DEBT DEBT DEBT"

I completely agree with you though, it's how I want to pay it back. Rent a small room for 1-2 years (£300 or so a month) and whack the rest on paying the loan/living costs. Then move out (Unless you're living with a GF or smt)

Well i'm finishing a chemistry thesis atm, and england would be a place i would like to spend at least 6 months to increase my overall english skills (writing and speaking). Plus England have some really nice research labs on my field. But it's not the place i would like to spent my life. As a short time experience could be nice tho.
And most people move to england because everyone and his dog can speak english (well kinda off). Try to move to denmark or sweden and learn their language to be fully integrated looks a lot harder for somenoe with only basic school.

I'm not too much of a fan of immigrants(from any country) who come here to live off the country either. Those who work etc, come in, have fun, enjoy the buffet and if you've worked for a year or so, sure, take some time to find a new job...but just coming here for free healthcare, cash and education, not a big fan.

Not to say all immigrants are this way.

i dont see why it only counts for immigrants. to me it counts for anybody just slacking off in any country indefinite.

All slackers should be deported whether they are white, brown or purple with yellow spots.

but it depends on where you live. there is no opportunities (that ive ever seen) to work in an office job etc here without experience. even to work on a till everywhere is asking for previous experience for fuck sake. its not a skilled job, yet you cant even get on the ladder without having had skill in the first place.

btw, 40k in 3 years? in an unskilled job?! no chance.

the only places to work where i live without an education or skill is in a factory, a fastfood joint or a call centre (even there you need GCSE though). all of them pay minimum wage, and in this day and age you cannot live on 10,000 a year on your own.

I work in a factory....it isn't skilled work...and i made 22.8k last year (before tax)

Well there is the "atleast your parents did something for the country" etc. factors in it.

As in, it's worse to come to a country to slack off, then to be born in a country to slack off.

That BNP lot make me laugh. All have haircuts...not exactly like Adolph Hitler, but *slightly* like Adolph Hitler. Variants on short back'n'sides with comb over up-top. Sez it all, unconcious communication and all that.
