Why do I still bother going into shops ?

I just got back from lunch and had taken a browse through some offline shops local to me, just for something to do, and trying to remember the last time I actually visited a real shop.

Smackdown 3 in "Game" was £44.95, this same game is on play247.com at £32.99 including VAT and P&P. Similarly a Palm M505 which I got from Dabs for £250 is selling for £300.

These are like 20% markups, you could probably go into business buying from the internet and selling on the street with those sort of margins.

Is "instant shopping" really that worth it ?

Although I have thought about it for ages I did my first online grocery shop the other day. The main thing holding me back was wanting to look at the stuff I was buying - eg picking a good punnet of strawberries etc. They seem to pick good stuff though.

Dead easy, and superb service. The only thing is that Tesco takes 2-3 days to deliver it

We've been doing online food shopping from sainsburys for a good few months now, whilst you get annoyed at some "replacements" for stuff not available, in general it's an excellent service and well worth avoiding the weekly crush at the "offline store" with the real life (tm) riff-raff, present company excepted :)

Example; I ordered a PP9 9v "square" battery, I got 8x 1.5v AA batteries as a "replacement" !

On the whole, using the "usual" shopping list facility, you tend to spend a lot less online because you don't get "tempted", for us thats around £40/week saving !

Heh, reminds me of the time I ordered a blow up doll from Tescos. Got a dildo instead.

Oh the hours of fun I had with that....

If you're single though, the supermarket is supposed to be an EXCELLENT place to meet women.

When I finally move out of my parents place, I'll be torn between lazyness and wanting to get laid.

Toughie.

that play247.com is excellent, tony hawks in EB is £44.99p compare to play247's £29.99p

I've preordered 2 dvd's for 15quid each delivered :D

There are still a lot of people who don't do any shopping online. It's a mixture of different reasons, not just false security problems.

Its statistically safer to put your credit card number into the average website than it is to read it over the phone to an operator.

I don't give a damn with my card number anyhow - if it gets nicked then its the card companies problem

I know that, you know but most the general public don't...hence the false refference in my statement ;)

You say about security online is safer, but the problem is you are more likely to be "compromised", i.e. your credit card number is amongst those accessed by a hacker.

Whether he uses your number or not, you need it to be changed, and sometimes that can be a real pain in the butt. Happened to me, the CC company phoned me up and suggested I change the number, for the next few weeks I got various mis-charges because my CC on file was now wrong everywhere.

Having your credit card number stolen is more of a inconvenience than a financial loss.

Tried to get the CC company to own up who had lost my CC number, but they wouldn't tell me, that's one thing I'd like to see changed because I'd certainly never shop again with a company who lost my CC number.

I can't stand having to stay in all day in the hope that the postie might deliver the goods I ordered. Gimme a shop any day.

Shopping online for clothes aint much fun, I mean you don't get to drag your B/F round every shop and try everything on, only to go back to the 1st shop you went in and get something from there:D :D

Online shopping is fine for static goods, when you know exactly the quality, condition and specification of what you are buying. One Palm M505 or copy of Smackdown is identical to any other, so buying them online is appropriate. Things like clothes, however, are always going to be better bought in retail outlets, because the shopping experience is very subjective. Jas's post is a good example - shopping for food online is fine when you buy 'standard' goods, but when it comes to stuff like fruit and veg you want to see what you're buying.

Stu is good at food shopping, I was impressed at his veg feeling prowess.

He once took me to Waitrose and I got scared by the unfamiliar surroundings.
