Only 1, possibly 2 of those can fit the description "actor".

You concentrate far too much on the actors the media want you to see. The actors I listed have given some fantastic performances IMO during some great films:
Michael Biehn - Aliens, the terminator, tombstone
Sean Pertwee - Dog soldiers (don't argue!!!)
Sean Biehn - Bravo two zero, lord of the rings tFotR
Kurt Russel - The thing, Executive decision

The actresses are chosen for both their acting ability and fuckability so that doesn't count.

I checked IMDB for Klaus Kinski and without reading through his entire history I couldn't tell anything he'd done that I recognised off-hand.

Could you credit him a bit please so I could either confirm or criticise your choice :)

(Noticed he died in 1991 though so RIP anyway)

Robert Duvall or Al Pacino for the gents and I'm having a bit of trouble thinking of an actress that could be considered a real favourite.

First, please don' t take what I said or say as a flame. Its all about personal choice.

However your first sentence there is quite laughable. Read this forum a bit and you'll see I'm a bit of a film nut and generally dislike mainstream Hollywood stuff but admit it has its place. If someone can act I'll acknowledge it and I don't care if its in a HK flick or Problem Child 3. I'm no elitist or mainstream slathering OK magazine junkie.

Btw I used the word actors - to encompass the men AND women you listed, I don't use the word actresses. I don't like the way you discount the fact they can act because they have "fuckability".

The one that definitely can act from your list is Helena Bonham-Carter. Kurt Russell has delivered some solid performances in his time but is a bit past it now.

All the films you mention are quite modern (yes I'm calling the last 20 years modern) and popcorn flicks. Don't get me wrong I pretty much enjoyed most that you list but I would hardly call them star turns of acting.

My favourite bits of acting (not favourite actors) are:

1. Peter Sellers in Dr. Strangelove.
2. Chaplin in The Great Dictator.
3. Audrey Hepburn in Wait Until Dark.

Honourable mentions to De Niro in Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, James Cagney in just about anything he did, Nick Cage in Adaptation, Vincent Cassel in Irreversible and Julie Delpy in Three Colours White.

I've deliberately not mentioned any of the HK/Korean/Jap cinema I adore as I didn't see any point in mentioning any of the (little known here) actors or films (go see Versus and Battle Royale, judging by what you listed you'd love them).

Heard of Natassja Kinski? Despite being gorgeous she's his daughter.

Anyway, pretty much all his work with Werner Herzog is fantastic. The problem with Kinski is if a script or contract landed on his doorstep he'd say "yes" regardless of quality which is why he's done so many (130+) films. You can catch him in anything from dark brooding arthouse cinema to spaghetti westerns.

Here's an excerpt grabbed from IMDB:

Born into poverty, this army veteran spent some time in sanitariums before catching the acting bug and appearing on the Berlin stage. An irascible-looking actor with pale skin, intense eyes, thick lips, and a seemingly stone-chiseled visage, Kinski subsequently starred in numerous European-made (or localed) movies, including such notable ones as A Time to Love and a Time to Die (1958), The Counterfeit Traitor (1962), Doctor Zhivago (1965), For a Few Dollars More (1966), Grand Slam (1968), but gained international fame for his collaborations with German director Werner Herzog: Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1972), Woyzeck (1978), Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), and Fitzcarraldo (1982, replacing the more conventionally cast Jason Robards as an Irish-born dreamer). Kinski also played in many cheap thrillers and horror movies throughout the 1960s and 1970s, most memorably the ultraviolent Jack the Ripper (1976). Fiercely pragmatic, he is said to have turned down a role in Raiders of the Lost Ark for one in Venom (1982) because the money was better. In later years he alternated appearances in ambitious Apictures (1981's Billy Wilder comedy Buddy Buddy 1984's The Little Drummer Girl) with stints in worthless genre flicks (1986's Crawlspace). He is the father of actress Nastassja Kinski.

Woyzeck is my favourite of his films.

That's exactly the opinion you should have, each to their own. Its important we don't all think the same otherwise it would be incredibly dull.

/edit: Although I did put slightly more effort into my side of the debate ;)

I think I'll add Sean Penn to my list as he (once in a while) does put in a sparkling performance.

Maybe we could have a thread for possibly best under-rated actors. This would probably get people arguing as it would probably bring out mroe questionable opinions.

I'll get slated for this, but I think Brad Pitt is underrated to an extent. People label him a pretty-boy no talent actor like Tom Cruise but he's done some pretty good stuff, Fight Club for one.

On a completely unrelated note.

I thought battle royale was very over rated.

No I'd actually agree. But then Sean Penn is one I'd put into this category also, along with Daniel Day-Lewis and Gary Oldman.

I don't think he has ever been labelled as a pretty boy no talent actor tbh.

I have enjoyed most of his performances. The mexican being the obvious exeption as it was fucking turd.
