So - my C drive is now full of the lovely new games my lad has been downloading faster than I thought my crappy adsl could handle... thanks all to the Steam sale.

Soooooo I'm stuckified. Please can I get some instructions on how I can move my steam installation from c:\program files\ to d:\stuff\whatever or e:\nopr0ninhereguv\stuff ?

Yes, I'm a n00b!

can you not just run the installation set up exe again and point it to another drive?

I'd like to thank n0c0de for his informative post, and septic peg for his absolutely pisstaking full of shite answer too :D

I took plan B - dump a load of crap onto D from C, not least 16Gb of video and photos from our holiday in 2007

I will shortly probably post a completely n00by question about the best deals for HDDs ;)

Ok - so I pondered a bit and decided that I need to upgrade the HD storage I have.

Currently I have a 120 Gb and a 380 Gb (or so) HDD combo with 3 partitions. I have about 200 Gb worth of stuff that I really don't want to lose, such as vids and photos. Vista is on the smaller drive, and it is this one I am now having some space issues on as Steam programs are all installed on that.

I'd rather not re-install Vista, tbpfh, but will if I have to. I'm thinking of buying one of those Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 32MB Cache that Kryten linked in the other thread, but I do have a mobo which supports raid configurations, so I am womdering about possibly getting 2 of the 1Tb drives in some form.

Can I keep Vista on the smaller drive, then install 2x 1Tb in a raid array to protect the archive of stuff I have? How about 120 for OS, 380 for programs and 2 x 1Tb for my archive?

What wouuld you guys suggest - I really don't fancy trying to archive this stuff off to DvDs ;)

jupzor, a while ago I invested in a 160GB lacie external usb drive, and with issues like this it's saved me more times than I can count. Granted, tis a laptop size drive, but it still reaches 25~30MB/s and that's a fookload more capacity than DVD's at the speed.

Anyway, for my recent testinstall of Win7, I backed up my steam and pron and music and what not to it and all was well.

I decided against raid i back my data up to a external drive which i leave in my desk at work except 1 weekend a month. I only do this over raid because if there is a fire or flood i should not lose anything.

But I do not see why adding 2 of the f3 drives to your raid will ruin things as long as the Vista drive is still first in boot order you will boot into Vista and have a 1tb raid drive to use as an archive.

I got myself a ReadyNAS duo. Just a shade over £140 notes with a 500gb hdd and a second free 500gb hdd that turned up the other day. I've got it so that it's raided to protect my personal stuff as I've figured out that in all honesty, I quite like being able to use my machine and not have to worry about "fucking it all up (tm)".

I'm not necessarily advocating this for you Jup but I think a non-PC based solution would probably serve you best as you would also be able to block your kiddies from deleting files, etc with appropriate permissions that would not need to be reset should you ever wipe your PC, buy your nippers a PC, etc.

The kids aren't really an issue to be fair - they each have laptops for their own stuff and are pc savvy enough to not accidentally delete stuff... I'm erring towards thinking that a raid would be a waste given I don't need everything protected. Sticking in 2 of those 1Tb babies would allow me to use the windows backup stuff quickly and easily, and not everything on the larger partitions would need backing up. Having a 1Tb hdd archive now should last quite a while and with HDD prices dropping I may be able to go with an HDD archive in a couple of years time......
