Blu Ray because Sony rule!

I seriously have no idea though the Blu Ray has more chance of being used for business ect with the 8 layer disk could be used for backups ect.

But seeing as you can get hd dvd for £200 and Blu Ray is near £1000. HD DVD is easier for now :(

But who is going to replace the whole dvd collection for either?? I would not buy either i will get blu ray in the PS3 and might buy a few films then but thats it.

I think Minidisc and UMD both prove that Sony's support alone isn't enough to make a viable formate for releasing copyright content on. Obviously UMD is used as the release format for their PSP games and Minidisc is still used as a pretty high-quality storage format for mix-tapes and walkmans and suchlike, but I don't think many new movies are coming out on UMD and I don't think many new albums are released on Minidisc.

Then again, apparently the HD-DVD encryption has been cracked already (or at least, an exploit has been shown to be possible on a per-disc basis, as opposed to a DCSS-style univeral crack o' doom). This might push the movie moguls towards Blu-Ray (which will almost certainly also be cracked before too long).

Basically it's a big old crapshoot, but I'm going to bet on Blu-Ray because I like the name...

With HD-DVD you dont need to replace the whole dvd collection to get better quality. The regular dvd's automaticly get better quality when played on a HD-dvd player afaik.. Think i read it somewhere... Im not sure if this is the same on Blu-ray players though.

I would assume thats just upscaling which i again assume would be the hardware not a feature of HD DVD. I already have a upscaling dvd player so i still do not need to buy anything :) But thats not true HD then. So i suppose if you were a HD snob upscaled would not be as good as true HD

The porn industry chose VHS over Betamax. The porn industry has already chosen HD DVD over Blu-Ray.

Porn > All. Seriously.

HD-DVD because that is what PCs will use, and probably the porn industry (as said above) it is still debatable whether PS3 will even be successful anyway. so far personally, i am far from impressed.

I'd currently say HD-DVD. It's cheaper, has a more recognisable brand name and isn't backed by a company with a poor history of failed formats. If Sony had launched the PS3 earlier then things may have been different.

Will there be a clear winner though? It might end up a bit like DVD-R and DVD+R, players will support both - LG has already launched a dual format player. Also there might be more dual format discs, HD-DVD on one side and Blu-ray on the other - Spiderman has already been released as a dual format disc.

Regardless of what happens it's only hurting the film industry and everything surrounding it. People are avoiding HD because they don't want to buy an obsolete player.

Wrong!

Vivid - One of the bigger porn players, has chosen to use blu ray.

Blu ray isn't quite cracked yet, there is another layer of security not yet being used. Which is BD+

AACS is already cracked, both of which are using, yet BD+ has yet to be broken by either dvd jons team or muslix64

I understand where you are coming from in terms of porn winning the betamax/vhs wars but things have changed slightly, and its not like _nobody_ is using blu ray.

Of course HD-DVD has its porn backers too, but don't exclude sony if you're misinformed.

Personally I hope neither format wins, Both are viable options really.

The Blu-ray Disc has gained a large amount of support in the corporate world,[45] with companies like Apple Inc., Dell, and Panasonic supporting it.

In a recent interview with gamespot, when quized on the new LG HD DVD/Blu Ray combo players, Sir Howard Stringer had this to say: "It's an expensive way of showing universal discs. The three biggest box-office winners of this year were, in order: Sony, Disney, and Fox. Those are the three Blu-ray players. When you consider that those three successful studios will be delivering last year's successful box office in home video this year, then that's an enormous advantage. The fourth is Warner, and they release in both formats, so it doesn't hurt. If you are going to be buying discs, you are going to be buying an awful lot of Blu-ray discs going forward--if you want Pirates of the Caribbean or James Bond or Da Vinci Code or Spider-Man. Universal is the only one with HD DVD. I don't feel terribly intimidated."

On November 29, 2004 four Hollywood studios (New Line Cinema, Paramount Pictures, Universal Studios and Warner Bros.) announced non-exclusive agreements to support HD DVD. Since that time, Paramount and Warner have chosen to release titles in both Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD, while only Universal has since announced exclusive support for HD DVD. Currently Sony Pictures, MGM, Disney and 20th Century Fox have all exclusively backed Blu-Ray.

They will coexist... both sides have put way too much money into it to back down.

And the porn industry hasn't chosen HDDVD over Blu-ray... I read that one of the major porn publishers has chosen to support both formats.

HD-DVD has already won when Sony announced they wanted to keep the right to reject any content (read: Porno) from being published on their (Blu-ray) format.

Which means that the Porno Industri have to take HD-DVD (which they was already favouring) which will move a gigantic part of the market away from Blu-ray and beside that, nobody in their right mind would support Blu-ray as long as it is a cencored media, as that would lead to to much control from Sony's part.

EDIT: just before anyone goes wicked on me for this: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070112-8602.html
Read between the lines: Sony threated to remove a Blu-ray licence from a major publisher if they published pornographic material on Blu-ray disks...

I find that very hard to belive and reading between the lines never works. Untill i see a statement from the blu ray group or whatever they are called i will belive it guese work and suspect Choad of posting it ! :p

Sony make a huge chunck of change from pron on umds so while they might not like it they would not throw away the money. And sony are not the only people involved in blu ray look at the list of other makers do your really belive they would allow it either?
