I've been using Outlook express for a while to read my alt.binaries & alt.music newsgroups.

Can anyone tell me a decent FREE newsgroup reader?

Preferably one where I don't have to register

Thank you :)

Says all anybody would ever need to start making assumptions about you..... ya pirating little git ;)

Free Agent by Forté is probably the best bet, as its the most powerful & its what I use to read the blueyonder.* newsgroups. Outlook express is a mangy pile of shite which should be disowned by microsoft.

I use Mozilla Mail for newsgroups... Dunno why, i don't use it for mail, but my mail client(kmail) doesn't do news, and i don't think i have anything else installed.

Oh well, it's free, in both senses of the word, and it does the job :)

Ahem

You need to use OE for your mail though right

No fs!

Both Outlook, and OutlookExpress are complete shite. Use anything but them. It's been rumoured that the big virus outbrakes are almost completely caused by Outlook uses.

Nope, any e-mail client can do a better job compared to outlook express. I don't much like outlook either but since i've already got office installed I don't bother installing a separate client

You're dam right i don't use IE. I use Mozilla.

Anyway, i couldn't use IE if i wanted to, so it's not even an issue, however i don't want to use IE, so it's hardly a bad situation.

Recently, I've been fiddling with other browsers and email clients, so I thought I'd share a little bit of what I went through.

Opera

Nice brower, the gestures are a lovely touch, but it is a real hassle setting up plugins, my home-banking doesn't recognise it's 128bit encryption, and the forums look all messed up, due to the jaza it uses, I have been lead to believe.

Mozilla

Very sexy client, what I am using now, like Netscape 6.0, but faster and more prone to dieing suddenly. I was warned though.

Pegasus

Nice mail client, featuring well hidden multipop support, but it's all working now. Looks basic compared to OE, but it reminds me of getting my email at university, and it does the job.

I use Outlook XP for my email and OE for my news

My only complaint with OE is its attachment capabilities, after downloading my ST:E episodes from there I have a 800Mb NG Database which has to be compressed and bodies removed which takes a couple of minutes.

I have tried a few other NG readers and most seem to have had there UI designed by someone who's never actually looked at the UI standards of windows :(

I WANT my program to close when I press Alt+F4, I WANT it to copy when I press Ctl+C, I WANT it to refresh when I press F5... AND most Importantly I WANT your stinking buttons to be shown in the XP Style I have selected not that old fasioned square block :)

[/rant]

/edit

And if were gonna talk about Web Browsers I tried the excuses of 'browsers' that were bundled with Mandrake and its many faces. I couldn't bare it, everything squished up, times new roman for half the fonts. Awful :(

Linux and its distub's have come a long since I tried it last but its still no match for XP/2000 as a desktop OS. It needs more order.

Don't know much about Mozilla.

But Opera looks pretty nice and I really like that multiple screens thing. I've heard its a bit of a system hog though and it can be difficult to customize

No, i run RedHat w/ KDE2.

I'm gonna see about switching distro when GNOME2 and KDE3 are out. RH Doesn't make new software a priority, so i'd be going along way from the Distro, so i'll consider using something more Hardcore, especially now i know Linux alot better :)

I use Slackware8 with Blackbox as my window manager. Atm I'm checking out Opera as a browser [I also have Nutscrape and Mozilla], and it seems pretty nice. I'm thinking of installing part of KDE so I can use Konquoror and KMail [as those pricks are keeping their killer apps held within the desktop instead of releasing them in true unix fashion].

A pic of my desktop can be found here.

Using OE for news and mail. Haven't used anything else, besides Netscape, which was shit. Lol, OE isn't that bad.

Hmm, i never found Konqueror to be that good. It allways seemed to `lose' cookies, logging me out of boards at annoying moments, and it didn't seem to automatically convert spaces in URLs to ASCII. Kmail is allright however, allthough i can't see why you would go to a huge effort to use it. I only use it as it'll generally run all week without crashing, or using too much Mem. Mozilla Mail is about as good, but with only 190megs, i can't really keep it running while i play games :)

While we're on the subject of desktops and X, do you know how to set the standard colours for GTK? I got the feeling it has something to do with ~/.gtkrc, however i didn't have one by default, and i have a feeling it's a bit complicated to set all the colours. I have KDE windows in a nice shade of green, however gray GTK tends to ruin my green effect :/

It's also been rumoured that most of the bad smells produced in Britain are produced by Linux users and their allergies to soap and water.
