Which console to buy?

I'm playing with the idea of getting a console. Purely so that Mrs Yuck can play the "beat 'em ups" she likes, in wide screen stylee, Tekken type games, she's a vicious biatch

But, it needs to be able to plug in to my adsl connection for online multiplayer, work on my PC monitor as I've no room for a TV near my adsl connection (well at a push), and have decent FPS games available or planned (my favourite genre). Also I've noticed a difference in the cost of the games for different consoles, so that might also be an issue.

Since I play solely PC games atm I've no clue what to get, recommendations?

The choices appear to be PS2 or Xbox, but I might be wrong if there is a new machine due soon.

PS2

It has a wider variety of 'better' games.

ie: Tekken 4 (Soon) and Virtua Fighter 4.

I thought this might happen.
PS2 seems to have the wider variety of games, but isn't that because it's been out longer?
On paper the XBox seems to have the better hardware.
Another point I forgot to mention is that I might use it also as a DVD player, is there any difference between the two boxes in playback?

well the PS2 has shite playback (nasty lip sink and colours fade into each other) and the xbox has pretty decent playback (not that I use it because I have a decent standalone :p )

and if you have broadband you can easly play halo (and others online) :D

XBox has better DVD playback by far. I've used my PS2 and XBox for DVDs quite a bit.

XBox also comes with ethernet built-in for easy connection to your PC (which you would use as a broadband gateway.)

The XBox also has the best console FPS - Halo.

Balancing all that out though is the fact that the PS2 has far better fighting games. DOA3 is OK but VF4 is better and Tekken 4 will probably be better too.

S'up to you...

Tbh a "beat 'em up" is a "beat 'em up" to Mrs Yuck.
She loved playing Soul Blade on the PS1.

Hmm XBox is in front so far, and Game seem to have some interesting package deals.

and of course the xbox version of Soul Calibur 2 will be the best one like all multi platform releases :)

Don't buy an Xbox. In a couple of years you will feel as intelligent as those who bought a 3DO. The PS2 has a better selection of games (fact), the DVD player is free and has a guaranteed future.

I see Xbox lameys still think consoles are all about the hardware, when everyone knows they're about the games. Mind you, with the legions of shit availible on the Xbox I suppose hardware is all they have to cling on to :/

asking here is the worst place to ask for an unbiased opinion. Get what has the games you want, if you dont like it you can always flog it off and get one of the others. I have a GC and an X-Box and like them both - GC for the classic nintendo stuff but X-Box for more "adult" stuff. X-Box has great DVD playback.

Didn't see the point of getting a PS2. Won't go into further detail - no need.

where is this fact?

it has a bigger selection of games but then any 3 year old console would

I sold my PS2 because in 2 years not one game impressed me more than anything on my "inferior" dreamcast

so far nearly every game on the xbox has impressed me :)

and as for the guarenteed future, you dont think the richest company in the world is gonna let one of its projects die without a fight do you?

Easiest advice is to buy all consoles like I do :)

If I wasn't confused before I am now :)

I'll visit our local GAME shop, play with the demo machines, see what games are available and scheduled, and then spend some dosh.

Yuck at the end of the day it's what suits you m8... I've got an xbox and a dc... I would love to have a PS-2 and a GC too, but my missus would go mental ;) Also, alot of the games coming out now are being released for all 3 consoles, so really it's the few games that are exclusive to each of the consoles that you should look at, for example if you wanna play SMB, get a GC, if you want Halo, PGR or DOA3, get an xbox (or a cheapo dc & get MSR), if you want loads of games, get a PS-2

I''ll probs not get many games, one or two for Mrs Yuck, and a few for post pub/club fun. I'd rather do the serious gaming on my trusty PC. Besides anything else the games are cheaper for PC's.
tbh probably won't get many dvd's either, I'll just "borrow" some :) Not much of a movie fan. The fact that we can play dvds though adds strength to my "lets get a console and spend £300 arguement with Mrs Yuck :)

AS much as it pains me to say this..

I would think about staying clear of the ps2

I bought a PS2 because of the games issue and I had played GTA3 on it :D...and tony hawks3.

But apart from that the games aren't as good as everyone makes out...MGS2 was a let down, Granturismo 3 was just 1 & 2 with polished graphics...and FF X is a linear story book...

Dont get me started on beat em ups....VF 4 seems to be the best but in my honest opinion they're all the fucking same...

The rest of the games available wont keep you interested for very long all just shallow and designed for quick gratification.

Like the other guy said....most games now are released for all 3 platforms....So....er...I've probably confused you more...

I thought the DVD feature would keep me interested...but the playback is less than perfect (i'm trying to be reasonably kind)

Soo.....what to do.....get a GC coz they're well cute?.....Halo and TH3 are the only games worth having for the x-box just now....but then a load of decent PC type games are coming out for the x-box (more depth and less quick gratification)

SO my money (although I hate to say it) would be on the X-BOX.

:D....rant over

Oh I forgot to add....

Yuck if you get a ps2 you have to get ICO....it feckin r0x0r (In a 12 year old's voice) :D

Probably one of the best games on the PS2 ...tonnes of puzzles and original type game/story

ok; another multi-console-owner perspective....

xbox dvd playback is FAR superior to ps2 playback, and yes it warrants the thirty quid you have to spend to be able to play back said dvd's...

ps2 atm does have some good beat-em-ups, but then, DOA3 is tidy on the xbox, and i can very easily see VF4 appearing on xbox, along with Soul Calibur 2 when that comes along...

ps2 is PANTS for fps... i tried timesplitters once... OMG, it was HORRENDOUS, the controls are PANTS.... the ps2 pad just isn't made for it....

now halo however... that is the devil's own testicles.... the controls are spot on, after an hour's play you won't even notice your using the joypad.

again as stated above, network play is going to be a very strong feature of the xbox... using standard ethernet for a start, instead of firewire networking.

oh yeh and if you need one more thing to sell it... you can use it as an mp3 deck by burning cd's to the hd. 8gb... not irrespectable....

oh yeh, that reminds me... no £28 a pop memory cards either.. nuff said.

i do however love my playtstation2 to bits... at the end of the day though, the xbox sounds more like "your thing"

remember £30 for X-box DVD kit is not expensive when compared to ps2 where to get it to the most out of it you will need:

A Multi-tap
A Memory Card or 2
Hard Drive
Broadband adapter

For FpS games thats a easy choice - Xbox

-Unreal Championship
-Halo , Halo 1.5Online(around early 2003) and Halo 2 (chribmo2003)
-Serious Sam
-Team SAS
-Turok Evolution
-Red Faction 2
-Deus Ex 2
-Timesplitters 2
-RTCW
-Op Flashpoint
-Battlefield 1942
-Unreal 2
-Quake 4
-Doom 3(uncomfirmed)

As For Beat em-ups , Ps2 seems the obvious choice at the moment.. but flicking through xbox magazine there is a couple of obvious good ones to come

Dead or alive 3 (out already)
A 3d version Of Mortal Kombat (looks quality)
Soul Calibur 2

For Online Play - Xbox Obvious Choice again

Halo (Which u can play online already)
Phantasy Star Online
Mechassualt
Star Wars Galaxies

There is a load more but off the top of my head they are the ones i remember

Oh did i forget to mention X-boxs Big AAA Titles?

Project Ego
Brute Force
Quantam Redshift
Panzer Dragoon
Blinx: The Time Sweeper
Splinter Cell
And also x-box gets a better version of MGS2

Oh and people say Xbox just gets loadsa games ported over from Ps2 and stuff.. well at least you are getting the better version of the game with the best control pad.

Basically In 2 Words- Get Xbox

That's the only part of that whole post I don't agree with... I still think the xbox would have been better off with 2 triggers a-la-PS-2 than those hard to get to black & white buttons...

XBox pad is far better for fps games as the analogue sticks have much less 'dead-zone.'

However... it sucketh for fighting games.
