Herro!

I've played around with GPL/Free CMS website systems before, things like php/postnuke, mambo/joomla, phpBB frontends, wordpress etc - but now I'm after something else.

The martial arts club I'm with has started a new fight/competition squad, and I offered to make a new small site for us. What I want it to be ideally is a bloggish-type affair, but with multiple users. So essentially each member (added by admin) will have their own posting rights, and their own profile page. Think of it as a wordpress type thing, but instead of categories down the side of the page each member is there with a link to their profile page (which they can update, play around with in a myspace *shudder* styleee), and a link to their posts. Ideally there'd be a calendar type option too. Forums are totally unnecessary as the main site is built on a phpBB install.

It doesn't need to be anything too over the top - I remember mambo/joomla having waaaaay too many options for what this needs - and it'd be nice to have a simple interface for profile pages so people could update them themselves (they aren't all particularly web-savvy). I realise it's probably going to be something like Wordpress + Plugins as a soultion, I just wanted to check if anyone had done something similar before and had any suggestions.

Cheers in advance helpful folks!

Hey Babs.
I use MovableType by SixApart. it's an extremely robust CMS/Blogging platform with a huge amount of plugins and other stuff available.

It does just about everything you mention, and also the page templates are customisable to do just about whatever you want through a reasonably easy language. It does require Perl though, so your hosting provider will have to allow that.

If you like, I can set up a dummy-blog on my site, and let you have a look at the backend of things. Drop me a PM if you're interested.

Joomla with the Community Builder plugin is pretty cool.

I ended up with a pretty simply wordpress install in the end, I could make it do all I wanted and it's nice and simple for folks to use.

In the meantime though I finally got around to giving drupal a go. since v5 it's so much easier with a decent installer (getting your webhost to give you sql lock tables privileges helps too!). It's a bit to get your head around with nodes and taxonomy, but it's very cool.
