Thinking Ubuntu One at the moment. 5 Gig for free and it's all nice and touchy-feely with woolen jumpers.

It's also not Google or Microsoft.

However, am I missing a trick and should I be looking at those two instead?

someone in my college class uses skydrive or sky something that comes free if you have a msn account afaik, he got 6-8gb free space seemed pretty good from what I saw but he was only uploading lots of small files; quite a simple layout to just drag and drop stuff.

Google drive isn't ready for primetime imo, the tools are so basic that you can't even control upload speed.

I have tried a couple of Cloud storage options and both were a pain in the aids, I then tried a seedbox from Feral Hosting and that seemed the better option. I struggle to think why cloud would be better than a seedbox. Surely you get the features of cloud and then some?

I used dropbox and ftpbox personally.

Dropbox for most things, and ftp box for longterm storage.

FTPbox runs on my own server so has much more space than dropbox does!

I keep my documents in Dropbox, its just so easy to use and just "works" without faffing.
My Onenote stuff syncs through Skydrive which also seems to just work on windows 8/office 2013.

There are some interesting talks on the net of people putting their Dropbox inside their Skydrive so that its all backed up in to places which is interesting but I haven't looked into it yet.

Dropbox, it works, if it fucks up it creates copies (marked "conflicted") and lets you pick the correct version.

Referal link for you if you sign up we both get an extra half a gig of storage: http://db.tt/Zkf5VlL

So, do we not like Ubuntu One? It sounds very much like dropbox...?

Considered it ages ago as I was hopeful that because it was Open Source that the client would run under FreeBSD / FreeNAS, i.e. that I could have it run at home on my NAS so whatever I dumped into it would always instantly appear on my machine at home. No such luck. Also client is shit for Ubuntu One imho.

Google is the same in reverse, despite all their staff using linux, there client is only properly there for windows.

Dropbox has Linux, Windows and Mac support. Granted that never solved my FreeBSD problem but the client works the same on all the platforms as far as I'm concerned. Throw up my Windows rig, little blue box icon, syncs my stuff. Run my ubuntu netbook, little blue box icon, syncs my stuff.

That's what I think about Dropbox too. "It just works" on everything. I find the camera upload handy as an automatic backup in the event of catastrophic SD card failure (and I've had it happen in the past). It also helps I got 50GB for having a GS3.
Even Mum has embraced Dropbox, using it to fling files around between her desktop, laptop and tablet

I've used Dropbox and Microsoft's SkyDrive. They're both pretty good, Dropbox has been around longer and the software has a few more features - the SkyDrive has excellent integration to Windows and now has a good Android app.

(I use SkyDrive these days, got 25GB free ;))

Skydrive is fully integrated into MS Office 2013, which is nice - auto syncs etc.

Dropbox is piss easy to use. It acts just like another folder on your computer. My spreadsheet files are kept on there. Plus you can auto-upload photos from your phone, as you take them (can restrict it to wifi only).

I tried SkyDrive for backing up docs and photos - but I found the upload speeds very slow, and the app painfully slow when searching for changes through a lot of files; it seems to have a very inefficient algorithm that took up quite a lot of HD work on boot.

MS were very quick to refund me though without fuss, which I was pleased with.

Switched to Google Drive and it seems to do the job better. Upload speeds still weren't great and the application seemed to get "stuck" after several hundred files upload so it needed a restart, but now it seems to work well and doesn't require so much intensive work to look for changes as SkyDrive.

I like it as it's integrated with all my other Google stuff (Mail, Calendar) which means I don't need ANOTHER website and set of user/passwords, which is nice. I would have used Dropbox if that hadn't been an issue (and G.Drive is a bit cheaper for more storage).

It's pretty basic, and lacking a few features like controlling upload speed, but its cheap and hopefully they'll build on it.

I've downloaded Dropbox based on this thread and it seems good but storage is going to be too limited for my desire to back up all my photos (need say 30Gb and rising). The pricing on dropbox seems very expensive compared to say Amazon's Cloud (£16 per year for 50Gb) which no-one else seems to have mentioned. Dropbox seems great for syncing files between locations and phone camera backups but I think for just storage Amazon's offering seems best.

Amazon does look shiny, I'd be interested to hear what it's like. If they offered a decent email and calendar service too I'd be there :)

Just stick them on Flickr, Pro accounts cost next to nothing.

The Pro accounts appear to be an option. The annual cost is $24.95 which is approx £16 so the same cost. Unlimited photos on Flickr vs 50Gb of any files on Amazon.

Indeed you could. One option would be to move the saved games in to the sync'd folder and symlink back to where they should be, then the game wouldn't notice (type "mklink" in a cmd prompt).

If you want backup without regular access (ie backup not cloud access) chromium is worth a look too.
