Where can I get ...

.... a soldering iron starter kit.

What I'd like it to contain is a decent mains soldering iron, a stand, maybe some test kits and some desoldering braid stuff.

I've looked in Maplin and on their hourendus(sp?) website with no luck. The only thing that came close was a soldering iron starter kit, although clicking on the link, it turned out to be a metal detector!!??

So, any thoughts? B&Q was also useless.

That doesn't look too bad. I'd like it to have a bit more stuff in it though. Although I suppose I could get something like that and a kit from Maplin.

Also, looking at that link has made me realise I've had a desoldering pump in my possesion for years. I've been using it to decorate cakes!

I think you should get a gas powered "cordless" one, they are far easier to use and double up as a little bunsen burner thingy.

My chip is still on the desk, I don't dare install it with my soldering skills ;)

Cheers for the link.

I did think about one of those, but for myself, not for a Christmas present ;)

nonono, they're pretty shite tbh.

Whipped just go to Maplin, buy a cheapo 25W iron & stand (with foam), a small bag of solder, and a bit of flux.

If you need any help with the technique, pm me I'll answer your questions.

BTW, I wouldn't recommend using a soldering iron to fix an IC in a board, solder a socket on instead, and plug the IC into that socket.

Don't bother, the tip will most likely be knackered if you buy a second hand one. You'd have to file it to buggery.

I'd love to claim that it was intentional and part of my comedy genius.
