I was looking for the number for the council number, when I came across there website and I discovered my towns motto is:

Watch and Prey

What the hell kinda motto is that.
Just wondering if anyone else has a decent Town motto.

Edinburgh is Nisi Dominus Frustra. Which means "Unless the Lord is with us, our labor is vain."

How horrible.

Progress in what, building two large hulking slabs of concrete stacked like one of those dodgy beer mat towers people make posing as climbing walls, giving the pissed townies somewhere to climb up, fall off, and break their necks?

...Actually that's not such a bad idea, shame they still look cack :p

Is that "prey" or "pray", because the first version just sounds fekkin scary! The second just sounds...pious?

Plymouth's motto is Turris fortissima est nomen Jehovah - "the name of Jehovah is the strongest tower", taken from the Proverbs of Solomon.

Whereas it should be, "Get the fuck out as soon as you can" ;)

Ipswich's is "Confide Recte Agens", which translates to "Be Confident When Doing Right". Not as bad as it could have been..

The park built nearby the stadium, walk past it every time I go to the pub and it still doesn't look any better than it did the last time :p

Seems to be "Consilio et Labore" - loosely translated "wisdom and effort" here.

the closest I've been able to find for arnhem is "SICUT LILIUM INTER SPINAS" which more or less means "like a lilly between thorns".

I'm intrested though, I'll have to check more thoroughly.

I've got no idea what Canterbury's motto is and even after some searching on council sites etc I couldn't find it. I do know the county motto is Invicta which is latin for "undefeated" or "unbeaten".
