Whats wrong with the PS3?

So I've finally got a new TV for my bedroom. A 32" sony. Now I've got a wii(had it since release), but I want better games and graphics (also DVD/blu ray player would be a bonus since i don't have either and usually I just watch DVD's on my small 17" laptop monitor)

Now I've heard people say blu-ray is not even noticably different on a 32" screen. But some people have said its amazing.

I don't care about PS2 backwards compatibility, if I wanted that, I would get my old PS2 out.

So is it worth spending £300 on a PS3 for the games and blu-ray on a 32" screen?

And I've heard people slate the PS3 on this forum, whats so bad about it?

Nothing's wrong with the PS3 and nothing is wrong with the 360. It's just that when people contract aids, they suddenly begin hating the PS3 in the same way that women becoming pregnant begin craving food.

It's a tough one dudley, you will notice some difference with upscaled dvd's and blu-rays on a 32" TV. And certainly over watching them on a 19" screen.

I suppose it comes down to whether you will actually buy any games or blu-rays. If you aren't going to buy any of the games, then it is a very pricey dvd/BD player you are buying.

There are some very good bundles around at the moment, with up to 4 free games or blurays.

Oh right, well yeah, I'm interested in some of the games. Notably GTA4, GT5P, Resident evil 5, ratchet and clank, uncharted, motorstorm1+2, COD, little big planet etc. Think I'll get my PS3 after christmas.

Fanboy nonsense. There's only one thing you can really complain about and that's the price.

It depends on if your TV is "HD Ready" (720p) or "Full HD" (1080p) and also how far you sit from the screen. A good rule of thumb is to take the diagonal size of the screen and multiply it by 2x or 2.5x. So for a 32" screen, you should sit 64"-80" (5'4" - 6'8") from the TV to best appreciate HD.

I have a 42" 1080p TV with PS3. We generally sit about 9'-10' from the screen and SkyHD looks great, upscaled DVDs look fine, and blurays look stunning.

With blurays it comes down to your TV rez. Bluray films are at 1080p so if you have a Full HD TV, you can get the picture without any alteration. If your TV is only HD Ready (720p) then you can either:
  • let the TV downscale the 1080p signal from the PS3, or
  • let the PS3 send the downscaled 720p signal to the TV
It all depends on which performs downscaling better with your equipment.

Dont look at the consoles, look at the games. Buy the one that has the most platform specific games that you want to play.

Nothing wrong with the console itself, its a very solid bit of kit, its the price that is wrong.

Alot will depend on how far you sit from the screen, if you are 6ft away you will not really see the benefits of Blu-Ray on a 32inch screen. Closer than 4ft and it much more noticable. With regards to games, well it isn't all about the resolution anyway, it is about 3d complexity and texture quality so the PS3 is going to look decent on any full HD TV regardless. Certainly much much nicer visually than the PS2.

Is it worth it at £300? To me personally no, your needs may well be different though so it is a call only you can make bud. I don't think you will be disappointed if you do buy, I just don't think it is great value but that is a matter of opinion I guess.

tbh I find the PS3 somewhat overly expensive. on the other hand it looks awesome, it does everything I want to, which is to mainly play movies really. my setup is almost the same as Zenith.UK describes and visual quality of games and films is just amazing.

Most people slate the ps3 for its price as for a pure games machine next to the 360 its expensive. But as you have said your are interested in blu ray as well then the price is not really such an issue as if you wanted gaming and blu ray you would pay the same for a cheap blu ray and 360 as you would for a ps3

Uncle Bill tells me he plans to take Sony out completely next year with a 360 blu-ray addon at a cost of £80.

Fantastic bit of kit but as said, it is very expensive for what it does. A plus side to it is the amount of speed still unlocked with the system. With 7 cores in use, very few games (if any...would be interesting to know) really make use of multi-threading technology so it effectively is just being used as a larger processor at the moment when it could do so much more.

I'm still unsure why; it isn't a hugely difficult thing to implement, my only thought is that it isn't used in case products want to be used multi-platform and having to adjust the product for any number of cores can take a bit of time. It isn't impossible though.

I couldnt afford a PS3 but i bought one anyway and i don't regret it at all, even if i did live off pasta for a few months at first :p

I've got a cheap 32" HDTV and the blurays look beautiful (buy planet earth, i dont care if it's not your thing you really have to get it ;)) as do the gfx. The wireless media aspect of it is great, 2 of my housemates have 360s and dont want to folk out the cash for a wireless thingy so we have loads of wires running around our house :(

The thing people always have a go with the 360 is having to buy the extra stuff like wireless for it. But i think its a great thing, you only buy what you want, i dont use the wireless as the router is next to my 360 so i saved money not having it. I would be annoyed if i had to pay for it and not need it.
