So I am watching tv tonight and I get a little teary over 'Child of our Time'. (Yes i know its really sad to admit) Ive been watching it for 7 years as my kid is about that age and it follows the same kids and their families each year as they grow up. I like to see what happens to them.

This week one of the mums that i really liked had cancer, I was waiting to see her progress in the next set of films, but then she died and left her lovely 7 year old girl behind.

Cue me in bits. I have always been a little sensitive to the world being shit, but since i have had kids stuff just gets me!!! Yes I know i dont have to watch it, and to be honest I do tend to avoid bad stuff to do with kids, but I had no idea she was going to die and it really affected me.

Mr Russell just laughs at me, as I am usually a bubbly happy sort so I guess he doesn't know how to take me and thinks im being silly. So I drive to my one of my friends house, expecting them to be out, so I can have a blub in peace.

They are home, they let me blub, they hug me, make me a cuppa and they have bought me a limited edition Cd that I expressed an interest in a week ago and couldn't get hold of. They then made me laugh with tales of their evening to cheer me up. How nice is that.

What is the nicest thing anyone has done for you?

When I was working over summer the branch I was placed in was abit further away than my usual one, one of the ladies that works there lived near me and apparently knew my dad when he used to be a branch manager so she offered to pick me up in the morning take me to work and take me home again for nowt. (I offered petrol money and stuff and she told me to stop being silly).

When I had my first epileptic fit somebody phoned an ambulance for me, that was also pretty nice.

But the nicest thing.. that's really hard to put my finger on, people do so much for others and it usually goes unnoticed. So realistically I may not actually know what the nicest thing someone has done for me is..

Taxi driver took me home for free at 1 o clock in the morning from the vets after my cat died. After I left a note in the window to let people know what happened to her a random stranger popped a sympathetic note through my letterbox and a little girl read the note and left a daffodil on the window ledge.

I'm sure I could come up with something more meaningful but that's the most recent I reckon.

Your friend seems like a very caring and special person, we all need somebody like that sometimes

As for me, my life has gone a bit off the rails over the last 6 months, due to lots of factors, that when viewed as a whole have knocked me for six and caused upset to my closest friends, one in particular

I think that the nicest thing that one particular person (my best friend) has done for me is the fact that they have stood by me after all the shit that i have put them through, and now i am coming out the other side of it, and feel stronger and stronger every day, they are still there to act as if nothing has happened, even though i know it has not been easy for them and i have hurt them emotionally

My friends have shown me so much love and warmth, that it overwhelm's me at times, to the point of tears. I have a very close circle of very close friends who have been there on the end of the phone, to feed me, to let me overstay my welcome when i dont want to be on my own, and to generally let me know i am cared for.

No money or materialistic things could ever come close to that. Dont ever take your friends for granted, because sometimes, and in my case, they are your family, and families should never be taken for granted either

When I was about 8 I fell off my bike, while I was crying and having my mum clean up my grazes, my 4 year old sister comes along, totally out of the blue and brings me my teddy. Adorably sweet :D

When I was younger a man took me to his house to see his puppys and gave me sweets. Dont remember what happened after that.

Ok, recent thing, was off walking around the yorkshire 3 peaks, stopped off at the pub. Asked the barman if he could call us a taxi. He said dont worry, someone will give you a lift home. Come time to go, he calls some guy over who takes us back to our campsite (bout 10 miles away) and refused to take any money for it.

Taxi driver took me home for free
Ditto, black cab driver was kind enough to pick up me and the missus at like 3am after following journey:
  • Delayed flight home
  • Missed connecting transport
  • Had to take coach to Victoria (closest remaining London destination)
  • Bus from Victoria to Crystal Palace (NB: First driver didn't wait for us to buy pay before you board tickets, a.k.a KensACuntTickets, so we had to wait over an hour)
  • Went to get cab from Crystal Palace to home, found Cab office had been shot up, cordoned off by old bill (had to walk 20 mins around to get to the other side of the cordon!)
  • Started raining
So drenched and I think in a pair of shorts at the time, this chap picked us up and took us home for free. Black cab drivers = w1n.

Loads of people have done nice things for me tbh. I think the nicest thing a stranger has done for me recently was when I was in Venezuela last year. I was stuck because my ATM cards didn't work and I had to call home to get some money via Western Union. After waiting half a day for the local WU office to open (in a fairly dodgy part of town), I got in, boiling hot and pretty frazzled and told them I was expecting a transfer (in my dubious Spanish) but the girl behind the counter wasn't getting it. Another girl behind me in the queue helped me out and got the transfer sorted, then offered me a lift right across town to the bus station so I catch my ride to Colombia. She basically gave up her lunch hour for me and wasn't after anything in return (she was some kind of exec for the phone company), which was really refreshing.

Although he won't admit it, Mabs is a bit of a softie. Probably one of the nicest things he's ever done for me was get me my Bagpus original painting (by Damini's brother - see previous thread ;) ).

However, one of the kindest and most thoughtful things he's done is to secretly order me a proper nursing chair so I can feed our son without getting the horrific backache I have been getting up til now.

Hmm, this thread reminded me of when I came off my push bike and onto the pavement at about 25mph.

I had some **** in a car right behind me, so me being late for college and a young fool (17), decided not to sit on the brakes going down a steep hill which so happens to have a nice bend in it to boot.

I began to lose control and veered into the pavement and was thrown over the bike and into the gravel with cuts and bruises. I still have the scars on my hip and thigh. :/

I later spoke with a friend of mine who said his brother was in this bus which went past just as I came off and there were people laughing their tits off. :/

Even still, while lying on the ground in a heap, there was this woman who stopped her car and helped me up and offered two things; to clean the cuts and a lift home.

I had to decline the lift as I only lived about 300m away, but I was so taken aback at how generous and how thoughtful this was, I got my mum to leave a note in the paper. :)

most of the people I met on the road while traveling in Western Australia's more remote areas. They tended to be so nice, and well versed in looking out for their fellow man's wellbeing that it was just unreal.

nicest thing that currently springs to mind is someone I don't really know that well offering to put me up for a couple of days after my former girlfriend decided to break up with me. guy's a star tbh.

Most unusual nice gesture was years ago; me and my ex were on holiday driving through New England. We stopped in a B&B in Plymouth (as in Plymouth Rock); run by a lovely couple (both teachers), proper old wooden house with the front porch and the stars 'n stripes flying above the door; the kind of nice, folksy Americana that people outside the US forget about when they're think about what a dick dubya is. Anyway, we dumped our bags, went out for dinner, and when we were strolling up to the hill back to the house, we noticed they'd taken down the Stars 'n Stripes and put the Union Flag up instead. Definitely gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling :)

A couple of years back my nan gave me a fair amount of money, paying mortgage off and then some type amount, that is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me, a life changing thing.

Smaller things but equally as touching are the flowers babs sent me when we had our son and also a mate in Holland (Halle) sent us a tiny pair of clogs for him as well, both those things had me almost in tears as I didn't know they were doing it.

Another one, I was cycling around the new forest, I'd gone all the way from southampton to there and was just starting to head back. I'd stopped to take a photo of a nice church and some other cyclist went past, stopped and asked if I was ok/had a puncture, was really cool
Cyclists generally are quite good at looking out for one another I think.

Aww, such a lovely thread. Don't really know where to start. Many people have done loads of wonderful things for me beyond the call of duty/friendship over the years.

Nicest thing any9one has ever done for me? Um.....I don't think its the nicest....but its recent.
Started new job in the theatres department at local hospital. Being a larger than average woman, the largest size scrubs that were in the changing room were still tight on me. I took no notice and vowed to lose weight, as its not like things regularly fit me anyway. Manager calls me into her office 2 days later, and hands me 5 tops and 5 trousers in my size, winks at me, and says, 'thought you'd be more comfortable in these.' Nearly made me cry.
