What's happened to the adventure game?

So I just dug out Grim Fandango, something reminded me of it and I fancied playing it again. I've just watched the intro and it reminded me of just how uber it was/still is. So creative, a story that is actually interesting, good writing, good puzzles, good fun and bloody funny.

There was a time when lucasarts and a few others released games of this calibre every year or so - where've they all gone? Genuine question - does anyone know if there are any good adventures coming out soon? What's the deal with the sequels to Sam n Max and Full Throttle?

Discuss. :m00:

Ah thats just one of those stories that does the rounds every year.

Some new company with a secretary/cleaner/whatever that was involved in the classic LucasArts stuff has bought the rights and will have a sequel out real soon.

A year later, repeat. Its clearly never going to happen.

Why did they die? I blame consoles. Theres very few games made these days for PC only, that style of game just wouldnt work ported to a console.

Edit: or maybe Im just typing a load of bollocks. New stuff may only be a few weeks away - http://www.gamespot.com/news/6157254.html

Simple, low sales figures for that genre of game.

Surely though it would be easy for a company to make a fairly easy editor to make those kinds of games - put it out on games mags for free and sell the best ones via an online store for like $5-10 ? :p

USE MY IDEA AND YOU OWE ME $1 PER SALE!

broken sword 4 angel of death got released to day, damn good game, but still mis the old point and click stuff. Full throttle has been axed i think and sam and max will be released in monthly episode form the peeps who made the preety good Bones games. there is also the sequel to the exellant klongest jorney called Dreamfall to consider as well.

tbh no idea why they are so rare these days considering all the lucas arts scumm games, simon the sorcerer, broken sword and beneath a steel sky get ported to everything from psp, pdas to chipped/hacked consoles. and there is still a market for them

How weird, I was bored at home the other day, and being internetless there, I decided to try Grim Fandango after borrowing it off a mate, it's quite addictive, I do like that style of game, and would love to be able to play another Sam + Max game :)

Broken Sword 4 came out recently (yesterday I think). That's a classic adventure game, albiet where you can have direct control over your movement (but it's not a huge thing). Quite good, but a bit short (just finished it after 10 hours or so play).

You're all forgetting the always brilliant monkey island games, they changed the point and click format for the forth game and we haven't heard from them since, I'm guessing sales were low for the last game, surely that tells them something.

I played Broken Sword III, and it was deeply poo. No brain power, it was just linear click click clickerah, and things just unfurled. I liked the previous games, so that one disappointed. I tried Syberia, and that just seemed a bit crap to me too. The puzzles were either really easy, or just madly abstract, with leaps of deduction that I had no idea how you were meant to make.

However, I loved Farenheit. LOVED IT. The fact that your actions altered the plot, that you could really interact with the scene as much as you liked, that there wasn't a set path conversations had to follow... I wasn't sold on the whole banging your girlfriend while you button mash scenario, but luckily I'm too malco-ordinated to ever get to that stage.

GTA San Andreas was the first story-line based game I'd played in eons. I reckon if you play it with a 400MHz cpu and 64MB ram you'll get a slide-show effect simulating an early adventure game (go North-West, etc).

I think Grim Fandango got there first with that style of play - it was awesome though. The fourth MI didn't work for other reasons tbh.

God yeah, that was so cringeworthy.

God I love adventure games. I've got one sat on my computer right now (ahem) thats (ahem) 'awaiting' me. 'Tony Tough and the Night of the Roasted Moths'. I have no idea what its about, but its supposed to be good.

I was well into MI1, MI2, MI3 was ok and I've never gotten around to completing MI4 because I don't like the control system. I also played Simon the Sorceror (good game), Full Throttle, S&M, DotT, all the Indiana Jones games, a Star Trek adventure that was out yarns ago that I liked.

The most fiendish puzzle I ever encountered was the very first 'move' in HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the text entry version).

It is a bit lame, but the game/story more than makes up for it.

Leisure Suit Larry > *.adventure games.

As for where did they go, I reckon they kinda morphed into single player RPG's, like Final Fantasy, Diablo and the like. Final Fantasy respecially I reckon is about as close as you're gonna get these days.

Final Fantasy bores me. Two steps, crashing glass, fight, two steps, crashing glass, fight, two steps... Kenny played it for about 80 hours, and it made me want to set fires.

Pheonix Wright Ace Attorney is the closest thing to a point and click adventure I have seen. Go buy a DS lite and it, now.

Anyone who wants to get their teeth into a really good tongue-in-cheek adventure game with some difficult puzzle solving should get Zork: Grand Inquisitor. I reinstalled it a few weeks ago to show my little 9 year old nephew and he absolutely loves it. Z:GI originally came out in the late nineteen nighties and graphically still holds well. What also makes the game fun to play are the on-screen gags, eccentric characters and amusing video clips featuring several famous actors including Dirk Benedict from the A-Team, Erick Avari from Star Trek and Michael McKean from Spinal Tap.

I never completed Grim Fandango so I've reinstalled it again for another try.
