probably not one for the lads but i wont assume you rough tough macho freddys house boys dont like jane austin untill you all start flaming me for such a girly post.

just watched the trailer for the new version of pride and prejudice and i have to say not impressed, im a great fan of the bbc adaptation with the lovely colin firth as Mister Darcy (yum!) not just because i think mr firth is rather lovely but because they did such a fab job and the cast were all faultless,
the new version imo looks very very hollywoodised and some of the characters look to be terrible caracatures kiera knightly plays elisabeth bennet and again sorry to say she seems to be playing it on the friviolous side from what i saw in the trailer,

anyhoo thi is just my opionion and for any of you out there that are interested heres the link for new movie info

be interested to know if anyone else out here also feels the bbc version just cant be topped.

I dunno - the jury is still out for me tbh - I also loved the BBC version (got the 10th anniversary edition on preorder in fact :) ). I think Matthew MacFayden has got it to be the equal of Colin Firth - particularly in the yum stakes :) Some of the casting looks pretty good too - Brenda Blethyn as Mrs Bennett and Judi Dench as Lady Catherine especially. I think Kiera Knightley might be the weak link here as you've said and the fact that the Mr Bingley/elder Bennett sister (cant remember her name) plot is completely missing as well as the Whickham bit - I mean even Bridget Jones' Diary managed to get that in!
The problem is that the BBC managed to get 6 hours of filming in to cover the book Andrew Davies also lifted large parts of dialogue directly from the book and there was absolutely no mucking about with the plot whatsoever. To try and get that into a 90 min or so film which has then to be sold to a wider (and by the quality of the script) younger audience will be nigh on impossible.
So....still dunno really - will prolly go and see it anyway but remember that both originals are the best :)

PS Wasn't sure about Mr Collins either

aye good point indis tbh the way they show mr bingly in the new one he looks like a complete bumbling idiot whereas hes supposed to be gentle and amiable and his love with jane (i think is the eldest sister) is one of the main story lines,

judi dench will make an excellant lady catherine as long as they stay true to the origional and keep her as the formidable battleaxe rather than trying to make her more warm and cuddly at the end which has a bloody awful habit of happening in this sort of thing.

i dunno it might be just me but im sick of these big movies coming in and changing everything to suit the minority that insists on things being changed from dry wit to slapstick farce, or a sad but believable ending to a happy but depressingly fake and sugary ending (any1 seen "from hell"? god that made me fume lol) if something is really that good leave it be fgs :(
