I'm sure if someone threw a "stupid paki" into conversation in society, or indeed on these forums; a whole torrent of abuse and disapproval would be unleashed.

Its because society only recognises certain combinations as racist whilst ignoring those that dont fit the bill.

Its because society is just as racist now as it was 40 years ago but people believe by avoiding certain terms they are now the new Martin Luther King.

Its all a load of crap and based on hypocrisy - its impossible to wipe out something as ingrained as peoples perception of us n them whether thats by racial appearance/language/religion etc. etc. so instead we made a scapegoat out of certain terms and pretend that we are now perfect!

It makes me laugh how it's socially acceptable to make fun of people with ginger hair and in some cases the media actually encourages it. And I know for a fact you're all dying to make some comment about how they deserve it coz they're ginger but I had a friend at school tried to kill himself because he was being bullied so bad, and all the other kids were doing was spouting lines from the tv series game on which was doing well at the time. It made me sick because even attempted suicide didn't stop the constant insults. One year a black kid started ripping into him and when my friend retaliated and called him a black bastard he was hauled in front of the headmaster and suspended for racist abuse, can you believe that?

I'm sure you're all going to prove my point now because making fun of someone because of the colour of their hair is funny but when it's the colour of their skin it's a crime. But I ask you what's the difference?

As per another thread, someone was referred to as a "stupid jock" without any intervention from moderators; it's socially acceptable in society to poke fun at the Scots, but I resent and find it equally offensive and as racist as "fucking ragheads". However, noone bats an eyelid at "jock" terms and that I should "lighten up".

It fills me with such rage when people do that that I start thinking about banning people forever. Which is a bit of a kneejerk, so I leave the thread, and don't come back, assuming another mod would deal with it.

Seriously? Got to say I'm surprised. I used to get "Taff" all the time when I was younger (and I'm not even actually Welsh) and it was water off a duck's back. I'd no more consider "Jock" a term of abuse than "Scouser", "Manc" or any other bit of regional shorthand.

This is going to sound sad, but in a sense it's like black men referring to each other as "the N word" - it's somewhat socially acceptable between people who know each other or have a bond - and since I'm sleeping with Trem and Throd - it's pretty harmless hearing it from you guys .

I don't like being called a Jock particularly, considering my dad is English, but it's when it's used in an insulting fashion as per "stupid Jock" that I really dislike the term.

If I was to start working in England and someone called me a Jock, it's the same as "the N word" really.

the way i see it -

religion is by choice, no matter what you say. you choose to be religious or you choose not to be, no one forces you in anyway at all. if someone is choosing something, i believe personally you can mock that all you want. its a choice in the end, so accept that people will have an opinion.

The problem is, that some people don't really have the 'choice' of being religious. Many states are founded alongside religion, and even countries such as America or the UK who try to create the appearance of being 'seperate' from religion, you cannot seperate religion from politics.

Even our whole moral and value system is created, by part, from politics.

And as for arabs? The religion pretty much is the state.

Whenever an international football tournament takes place, they all support the opposing team to England which is pathetic really. Alas, Scotland has its fair share of fuckwits. And thats the problem, everything is socially constructed. Even this notion of "i'm from where I am and I'm proud" is socially constructed. In an ideal world we would be able to see that we are all humans, all together on the same planet and we should all chip in. But we can't because of stuff like this. Even without religion this still remains.

Thats why life will be "nasty, brutish and short" and always will be.
