It's designed to catch you out by hiding a minus in there and playing a trick on the mind with all the adds, you're brain takes the 'x' as an add.

It just reinforces to me how utterly incompatible the brain is with maths, there should be a law against teaching it.

tho on my HTC calculator is comes up with 14, but on my other phone it's 0

Most calculators don't process long calculations, so they re-calculate with each sign that's entered. That would give them a running total each time you press a + or -, which means the total is then multiplied by 0, assuming you enter the sum in the order it's given.
The HTC calculator probably takes the entire input, then does the calculation on the sum as a whole, rather than a running total, so it gives the correct result.

i explained it slightly wrong cos i misread the question but the end result is the same

hm... I've re read it, and maybe you are right on that one. I got tricked by it. He only lost the £10 cost of the horse, and the £10 profit? so £20 in total. The £30 he refunded to the shopkeeper is irrelevant... that's what caught me out.

on face book one of my mates just answered one of those shit poles for this question

1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+1x0 =? with 14.


.....


now my issues are

1. it's clearly 0
2. it would be 15 anyway without the x 0
3. 564k people answered 0, the next highest with 468k was 14
4. IT WOULD BE 15 WITHOUT THE X 0

1: No it's not. multiplication before addition, so:
step 0: 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+1x0
step 1: 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+0 (1x0 = 0)
step 2: 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+5 (1+1+1+1+1+0)
step 3: 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+5 (+1-1 cancels each other out)
step 4: 9+5 (1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1 = 9)
step 5: 14

I'm utter shit at maths and don't care but am I right in thinking that the answer to 10 + 10 x 0 is in fact 10 as it would be 10 + (10 x 0) ?

I really want to know where you got 10 + 10 from... apart from that, you are really, really wrong. You've probably only read the first post, but 14 is the correct answer, Gohan messed up.
