We let the dogs out last night, about 11pm. Samm was looking at something outside bashing around, sort of looked like a moth or cricket. I said "leave it alone, shut the door" as I said that this monster decided it wanted to come in. So as Samm runs off screaming this missile was spinning around the light, I was surprised it didn't knock it off the ceiling. I shouted to my dog "GET IT, KILL!!" as usual he stood there wagging his tail at me. This was obviously his plan because as this bullet with wings was hovering towards him, probably to carry him off to its cave, he thwacked it with his fat tail. It sort of spun slowly to the kitchen floor and I chucked my cereal bowl over it, then a glass.

It isn't a moth, its wings are its shell, they are sort of solid. It has evil little black eyes as well and sort of fans on its antennae. It is about an inch and a half in length and about half an inch fat. What the fuck is it?

We let it go and it did eventually fly off but this was after it had tried to lift the patio doors off and attack us again.

I feel for you Tremlar. Attacked by giant man-eating beetles, having the woman run off and not protect you like she should, the dog just sit there smiling while you shout at it. It's a wonder you've managed to get this far!

Its a May Fly, they were once extremely common in Europe, almost went extinct. They're on the up though, so expect to see more of them :)

Just think yourself lucky it wasn't this:

Uhh, to me "may fly" means mayfly, which is kind of not quite that. Though they mention cockchafers being colloquially known as 'may bugs' in the wikipedia article.

Talking of isopods, holy shit.

A parasite that "enters the mouth of a fish, then eats the tongue and lives in its place."

Re: horse shoe crabs. They sell them fresh at a local resturant - i like how some creatures have evolved with their own bowl. Blue copper based blood!

I do struggle to kill anything tbh. I did squash one of those Fake Widow spiders the other day though in case it bit my son. Besides there was no way this demon would of been squashed by a brick, it would of lifted it up and twatted me with it :(

I am sure its the May Bug, I have been out in the garden all day and I haven't seen him, hes waiting somewhere for me though!

These are just as bad as your man eating Beetle Trem...

Parktown prawn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I see your oversized South African cricket (I have seen these in Joburg btw) and raise you The Giant Weta. Didn't see any of these fuckers in the wild in NZ, only in the zoo, but plenty of the smaller ones (still about 3-4cm long not including big fuckoff antennae) in Abel Tasman national park - buggers invaded our barbecue one night, hundreds of 'em. Scary as hell but totally harmless.

If you've had one cockchafer, you're likely to get many more.

At a 24hr race at Snetterton a few years ago, they had just started to emerge ane were swarming in from the surrounding fields at night, chasing the lights of all the racing cars doing 130+ down the back straight. The cars had to keep coming in to get their screens cleaned, it was very messy.

Try leaving a light on, pointed at the window at night, you should hear tons of the little buggers headbutting your glass.
