What should happen to the servers?

That would be a nice perk, but would it really make the difference between subbing and not? There's competitions to win win games all over the net...

It would probably depend on what was the prizes imo, I think that if they gave away older games it wouldn't help. But if they got hold of an early release i.e. eve online then the first copy of that might have sparked some interest. It really depends on what's offered and how it's advertised. If nobody knows about it they won't be interested.

At least you could p!mp subscription heavily on the 'open' servers?

At the moment game.net has a rep for all the srevers being empty - and they are :( At least having a few full servers on the service would change that?

Just another suggestion that could be considered....

For each game a number of servers could be public and some could be subs only...

This way, we would be pimping... while subscribers get 'exclusive' access to subs only servers.

But I'm so obviously right. Again, why would people sub so they can play on the empty servers, instead of the free ones?

I think it has to be either a timed cutoff, or lots of bookables for subs, with maybe a single free public if you were going for the latter.

why would they sub if they can play on the servers during peak times? the cut off HAS to be some sort of annoying time. or maybe non subs get 15mins or summat? thats not enough to get into a game and enough to check out what we're offering. but then people might just say 'fuck it' and not bother turning up for those 15 mins...

MAN SUBS SYSTEM IS BORKED :)

I think after 7pm is a peak time for most people, other than small children.

3 makes the most sense if you want people to buy subs; though I think you could have just one server for each of the most popular games open all the time to anyone.

i wasnt asking what peak time was, i was saying that the non subs have to get cut off at a time that would both annoy them, but have enough for a taster, and enough for them to come back and be annoyed again (is that possible? lol im mashed :()

again... why would people buy subs if they can play on barrysworld without?

I was thinking if there was only one CS server for instance, it would be full all the time and difficult to get on; quite annoying. :)

how big are CS servers? like, how many players?

so we could see 16 people all none subs, and people without subs might not be able to get on their own servers?
this poll should be cross forum :)

Nail. Hit. Head.

No matter how much pimping GAME do instore for GAME.NET, the only way I can see to get people to register is to have them play with some subscribers at a time when the server's public and then we could tell them about subscribing.

If you're having a great game with some people and half aren't subbed. I can quite easily see them popping along to the site, signing up quickly with a credit card and popping back into the server to continue the fun game, once the subs only cut off period has been reached. I mean, it's not like it costs a fortune for a year.

Hence why I voted for option 3.

Guys i've not really posted in the General Forums before so be nice :p

The whole point of this discussion is that you need non subs to fill the spaces so that the subs can have a good game.

Could you ask the swanky Game programmers to come up with a server filter that allows 6 (or 8) non-subs to join a 16 player server? (and more for bigger servers)

That way, you have enough for small games and you give the subs something to shoot at.

ALSO!!! :) You need to offer more non-server related features for the gamers. Why not have an exclusive Subs web/news/reviews site like IGN?

Just idea's, sorry if they are not what you are looking for.

Hi guys,
Of the options listed I've gone for 3 but going along with the Lite version of Game.net, etc... is there any way that you can limit the length of time you hold a non-paying Game.net sub?

When I first signed up, I just registered as a general user meaning of course I didn't get the fast ftp, email, webspace, and most importantly access to the servers. Is there any way that could be opened up as a full sub, or maybe a sub that gives access to the games servers but then after a month or 3 months the user gets a warning saying - look, if you want to keep playing with Game.net you'll have to take out a subscription?

While I know this may mean users could practically keep getting trial accounts, could that be monitored through IP addresses to ensure users weren't just closing one trial and opening another?

Apologies if this has been discussed or if I've misunderstood the whole subs deal in the first place. Just thought that may be a possible way forward.

Cheers
Sil

Haven't read the whole thread so this might have been suggested, if so soz...

Non subs get double the ping the subs get, actually build in a tiny bit of latency for the non subs. As soon as they sub the slight lag is gawn.

This was rejected because it makes the servers look bad to potential subs.

Remain as they are.
Not addressing the issue. I thought the idea was to try and get more people on the servers. No matter what people try and do in this situation, it doesnt seem to be working (yet)

Move them all public facing again (this would result in a drastic reduction of server numbers).
An support etc which needs money to continue. Not a viable option if GAME wishes to provide a high quality of service (that is what you are trying to do?)

Have them public until a certain time of the evening then move them Subs only.
Rings my bell. Need to have a realistic time for cutoffs. e.g.
6pm cutoff. Not too many "adult" gamers would be ready for this time. Could result in an influx of immature gamers.

Close them all down and just increase the number of bookables, allowing public bookables at the same time (no password).
Cant personally see this as an option.

Of the given suggestions, has to be option 3 really.

Also change the server names back to Barrysworld. Every online gamer knows the name as place of quality servers. It will also put the servers at the top of game browsers windows above other UK based game servers :)

I'd go for #2 in a perfect world but as Game/BW are here to make money it'd be #3.

But how it would work.... I'm not sure :(

Film4 and Disney Channel on Sky TV have odd "free" weekends where ppl get a short term view of teh good stuff.

BW could open up servers to pubs 1 weekend in 3.

Ive gone for option 3. I would like to see it where the servers are busy and then at a certain time they close for the nonsubs but leaves the paying subs in game. This would certainly be good but how could you notify the user that they are being disconnected because they arnt a subscriber? Would also be nice but certainly impossible to kick a nonsubs player, on a full server, if a subs one wanted to play.

I would also like to see CJRavey include a link to game.net in his weekly product pimping email.

I have pointed this out as simple, free marketing a bunch of times, but they don't seem to take it on board.

There will be a lot of game customers getting this email who aren't aware of game.net.

It doesn't have to be too intrusive, just a small line with a link near the end of the email.

At the end of the day I can't see peeps joining BW "en masse" until the other big name server groups start p2p too.... why pay when you can get it for free... Erm, I'll shut-up now, considering his has been said a meeeewwwwwion times...

See previous pages, not technically impossible at all. However, because (understandably) we can't be told what GAME's resources are for this that's been put on hold.
And notification of the users, it was proposed that this could be done using RCON (Remote Console) in most games.

My view

I think it should be open to all and reduce the servers. Since paying over my money for this server i have never used it. The reason for this is noone is on game.net servers most of the times i play. So far my barrys icon thing connect for no reason. I know we have just been given some free time, restart year. But apart from that i would def quit the service not on it being bad but the fact the main population of gamers play on free servers. Get advert e-mails once in a while, but i know what i was months ahead and i have plenty of pre orders with game. I liked the good old barrysworld days :D.
