Lo,

You will be hard pressed to find a pace modem now since they have been bust a good 6 months at least.
If you can find one, get it, if not next best thing is a Diamond Supra Express Internal or external, both good modems and a fair price too.

:)

pace 56k internal :p

it's ISA tho so make sure you have a slot spare (make sure you even have a slot :p)

or....

diamond supra express (i hear they're good)
creative modem blaster (or summat)

i've been using the pace for a good 3yrs almost and it's been damn good to me :p

bad thing is that it's ISA and that's a PAIN IN THE ARSE :p

means i'll have to get a new modem when i next upgrade motherboard :p

I lurve ISA modems :) My latest mobo has luckily got 1 ISA slot thank fuck :) I use a diamond supraexpress 56SPi beastie :D

Moodemz, diamond supra express 56iPRO or 56ePRO are the best VFM ones on the market today, internal and external respectively.

Diamond Multimedia Supraexpress external is the fella!
Before I got ISDN, I had one and used to be called LPB sometimes!! Of course it depends on the isp, but it's all relative init!

...yeah, mmmm, .... I found it depends on other shit. I heard ISA modems were better then PCI cause of cpu hoggage, and, certain brands of ISA modems were fekin A.
But internals depend on the cpu more than externals, so, what cpu you've got could make a difference, though most peeps I know got large ones ... :/
The term "WinModem" hasn't been mention at all so far ... well it has now ...
Your modem drivers are THE most important thing to sort out when talking connections and ping shit ... if your ping is 200-300 for no good reason it'll probably be your modem drivers.
I say no good reason because the number one question on everyones lips (asides slip it in) is ... What isp u using?
I've got a SupraExpress 56e PRO with the BIOS flashed and the newest drivers installed ... with BTInternet as an isp I get average pings to Barrysworld of 170 (150 when it's quiet 200 when it's not) ... with Jolt as an isp (great for gaming ... doh! ... no,no it isn't, don't use it, forget I even mentioned it) I get an average ping of 140 (120 when it's quiet 160 when it's not).
My hesitation at naming my favoured gaming isp? Traffic. I can never get a good ping till late, late, in the night ... 2-6 a.m. is the best cause everyone (sunday drivers) are sleeping.
So there you have it ... and, erm, Kwik why can't you get isdn? What about cable? What about adsl? What about love? What about rigging a microwave generator and hogging the airwaves?

... oh, yeah, and beware thee that not all external modems are good for your scrawny, creeky, old processor ... usb external modems are apparently good at chatting with your cpu more than you'd like ... one that I saw gave a warning on the box "MAY HOG YOUR CPU (like a beech) WHEN YOU NEED IT MOST!!!" ... well ok maybe not quite that ... heh, they actually promoted this like a "feature" you'd want to pay extra for! :/
It was like, erm..., "why pay more money for hardware inside the modem when your cpu could take up the extra workload" !!! (which is essentially what winmodem is isn't it?)

Pings of 110 on a 56k modem??

Do you live next door to the telephone exchange nearest to the BW servers or something?

I got 110 once, u have to be standing still on an empty server tho ;) I very much doubt those peeps who say 'I ping @ 110ms in a hefty game' are telling the troooof :D

www.express-computers.co.uk

is where my gf purchased a pace 56k internal quite recently....

btw, i've seen my ping drop to 98 in q2 before....

combination of :-
right init string
software compression
jolt dialup -> jolt server :p
a bit of luck :)

not that it stays at that very long :)

but basically with all those tweaks, i rarely ever see my ping above 200 in game when on a gaming isp.

The Diamond Multimedia Supraexpress I mentioned earlier used to give me around 100 ping!! Now that is pretty amazing I think.
Do NOT get internal! Do not get a winmodem! Do not get usb! Follow that and your'll be ok imho.
And also use an isp that supports software compression .......... which is almost all ....... except BT of course!

GET internal, external modems have a lag inducing problem. My pace used to ping me around 100 solid on the original Barrydial, my all time low was 96.

Dont get a software modem, the best bet is a hardware ISA modem : funnily enough, 40 quid generic ISA hardware modems seem to perform just as well as the diamonds for me.

Nothing will ever touch the quality that the Pace internals chucked out imo.

QW pings of 100-135 are fairly common on a Pace Internal 56k. I think i once managed 90, but they tend not to stay below 100 for long.

Q3 seems pretty dire on any modem though, so i got ISDN recently.

Two words. Hayes Accura. Back in the days when ISDN was prohibively expensive, and uni wouldnt let me take JANET home with me, I played on a modem at my friends house. It was a Hayes Accura, using a Comtel phone line, BW ISP to a UKCCL server, highest ping noticed in game was 120. I recently used at at another friends house on a BT Line. Using BTi ping was a constant 150 in UT. On a sunday afternoon.... Then proceeding to download from america at 6K a sec (on CIX this time) kind amade me think "This modem is quite good really". Unfortunately I think Accuras are also hard to come by, as Hayes went under about the same time as Pace :/

Bodhi

P.S Never EVER buy a BT Speedway External TA. Whilst the aforementioned friend was pinging 120 on a modem, I was pinging 150+ on ISDN.......
