FPS:
-Quake 1
-Half Life
-Thief 2: The Metal Age (Dark Project had too many flaws imo, but was really really good aswell, just Thief 2 had that little bit that made it superb)

RTS:
-Warcraft 1+2 (they were the trendsetters for RTS games, not Dune from Westwood)
-Command & Conquer
-Starcraft (for still being alive)
-Die Siedler (or "The Settlers", as the gayjin ehh...I mean the non-Germans call it. The game was fun, had a cool economy and the settlers were just too cute =) )
-Earth 2150 (combining different chassis+weapons on your units was something new afaik)

Roleplay:
-Diablo (first really big Hack & Slay game that attracted the masses)
-DAoC (yes, DAoC, cause it was the first game to open up gigantic battlefields, which hundreds of players can access at the same time. It brought PvP, but with a protected leveling area =) )

I'm near to 100% sure that I forgot lots of games, but these are the ones I can think of atm =)

Planescape Torment was fun, kept me amused for a while...

For me though, there are 2 games in existance that I doubt will ever be surpassed...

Final Fantasy 7 - Awsome game. Just couldn't put it down
Elite - That game was years ahead of its time...

The follow up game was better, millions of star systems to explore, you could trade, take missions for various factions, become a pirate, become a bounty hunter and track down pirates or even become an assasin. That is barely scratching the surface of what Frontier offered, Elite is legendary and deservedly so but Frontier was a better gaming experience in every way.

Oh and before I forget, Monkey Island 1 and 2 have never been surpassed as adventure games, they were funny and clever. I spent 3 days straight without sleep playing MI2 I was so hooked, I suppose 2 of those days were spent swapping discs though! :p Happy days :D

nothing on that list tbh (maybe ff7)

but if I have to choose one, then WoW - brought mmorpg's to the masses. People who had never even heard of mmorpg's before, from TV, FPS's, Battlenet and exsisting mmorpg players.

DAOC

I still get a tingly feeling when remembering the first few weeks there.

a noob not only to the game but to the genre that one game definetly changed my life, in many subtle ways, some which have a major bearing on me still today, 5 years after.....

doom1/2 then quake
but no game has given the feeling like daoc did in the start, running off in galplen and spending 2 hours in the woods (50meter from galplen) and wondering where the fuck i where, then saw a shadow on a horse come riding and leept into the woods getting killed :] was ace!

For groundbreaking games i would have to choose the following...

Elite: for shear vastness and playability, in thoose days when you didnt mind spending an hour to fly around a planet as station was on other side.

Lords of Midnight: one of the first directional perspective games with multiple ways to win/loose (if any finished doomdarks revenge can you tell me what happened when you got to the end of the tunnel, my version crashed the one time i got there)

Star Control 2: so many differant aspects (resourse gathering, asteroid like battles, conversing with aliens ect) to it and had a great sense of humour as well, and not forgetting the funky music.
(as mentioned before someone did an updated version with voices <grin>)

Baldurs Gate. I've never seen other games that had me addicted like that one. The other blackisle/bioware games after that also had me junking pixles but BG1 I have to vote as 'superiour' of it's time.

And yes, diablo was fun too ;)
BG1 > FF7 > all

Mine did the same. Tbh I think that was the end :(.

If you're interested goggle it, there's a PC conversion available with a game editor. Still playable for an afternoon's or so messing about.

Elite : Frontier

No contest there, never been any game that had the scope, size or freedom that game had. It was sheer brilliance for it's time, they couldn't reproduce it now in my opinion.

Agreed. :)
