Feck it.

I've just done a couple of online insurance quotes for a Honda S2000.

NOT happy. One refused and the other said 1300 quid!

(31 year old man, no crashes and, um, 8 points (3 and a 5 - both from hidden cameras on empty fucking motorways, and I never speed in built up areas).

So. What should I get? And no chavmobiles please :(

Scouse, try PEART associates:

http://www.peart.co.uk/

They're pretty good, got my TVR for £900 fully comp with a £500 excess. Thats with full ncb and clean license, manchester postcode (and in my line of work insurance is always v high)

Also, try asking this on www.pistonheads.com there are quite a few s2000 owners on there.

Hehe, a friend of mine told his insurance company he bought an MX-5, his insurance is £1450. He's 20. :)

And that's without telling them the numerous modifications he's got on it.

As for suggesting a car, I'm quite partial to:

Mazda RX-7 (First choice)
Mitsubishi Evo VI (Second, None of this Subaru crap, either ;))
Mitsubishi 3000GT (Third)
Mitsubishi Galant (I quite like Mitsubishi's :))
TVR Sagaris (Saw this on 5th Gear, Wow!)

Also, be sure to check out www.confused.com, as they go to all sorts of insurance companies for you, just by filling in the fields once.

Who did you get quotes from? I got my 350Z with Privilege for £800, living in West London (no garage) and with a month's speeding ban on my licence. Oh, and a tip, NEVER use the online forms; the people in the call centres have flexibility, web forms don't. I got quoted between 2 and 3 grand for my Z using web forms.

Get a secondhand Boxster they're much better roadsters. Unless all you want to do is pose in which case there's a Z4 waiting for you. Try Tescos for insurance, they insured me for £700 on a Golf GTI (insurance group 15) when I was 22 so will be worth checking out. Otherwise check the back of evo there are plenty of performace car insurance specialists in there.

It should cost more to be honest. The points system on licencing needs to act as a REAL deterrent for people who want to drive silly and/or in silly cars on roads. Not saying you're silly, or the car is silly - but rather people with points on their licenses should be made to pay BIG on engines that will allow them to repeat offend. Should that person desire to insure themselves on a sensible modest car it is only then that points shouldn't affect cost too much: they are, of course, less likely to drive a Micra speeding around than an S2000, for obvious reasons. I understand your situation, and love S2000s, although I find it surprising that you have taken surprise to this. If I were an insurance company, and someone applied for insurance on a fast, sporty iconic car I'd be pretty damn sure in my head they'd want to speed again.

Most people who drive fast cars do so carefully and responsibly. Its the noobs in Astras and Corsas who drive up insurance for the rest of us.

Its kind of a good thing you're not an insurance company then ;). High insurance premiums on sporty or powerful cars have very little to do with how fast they go, or even how fast the driver's gone before (according to their speeding points), because the insurance companies know that fast cars don't make you go much faster, and they also know they don't make you more likely to have an accident (my best mate's an actuary and we had a long conversation about this); if you're the kind of driver who likes to go fast, you'll do it no matter what kind of car you're in. The thing that whacks up the premium on an S2000 would be a) the age of the driver (because its lack of skill that causes accidents, not speed per se), and b) its much increased propensity to get nicked. Insurance companies increase your premiums if you have speeding points because they can, not because you're a higher risk.

Impreza STi 8 imho. Wipes the floor with Evos, fucking quick(really blippy) and feel more solid than an Evo plus they are more fun and less gay :D

My next car will be one of them. Didn't like them at first then I had a go in a friends and was gob smacked.

Very very popular in the Lotus community, and 4 free trackdays a year too, which is the right place to drive your car to it's potential.

A Micra will do 50mph in a 30mph zone just as well as an S2000. The S2000 can stop a lot faster though. Smaller cars tend to get ragged to the limits of their capabilities. Wheras a faster car will not be breaking sweat, and would therefore be able to avoid accidents easier. imo.

Id love a new car. Ive had my Audi 80 for over a year and half now, and because of the on-off problems with it, im always worried about going long distances in it.

Its everything i want in a car too, but its about 16yo (1989?).

Altho im 21, and on my dads Insurance.. But im earning i feel a decent enough income which is always nice ;o

Second hand Evo 6 / Impreza STi Trem's choice...

You know it make sense.

A reasonable size to fit four adults, a large boot for a few sets of golf clubs and/or a large shopping load ..... but it will be quick enough to leave a small moist brown patch in your pants, all-wheel drive and huge amounts of grip.

Quicker, less hairdresser-ish and more practical than the S2000.

However, they will probably cost more to insure.

Would you be prepared to buy a non-performance car?

Downside of the STi its that its a huge magnet for thievery. Nice car though, I got totally owned by one the other week, even with my foot planted to the floor he kept pulling away.

Bastard, probably haxxing.

They look shit though. More to life than just tear yer nuts off speed; you've got to look good while you're doing it, and Imprezas and Evos just look like they've crashed through Halfords front window. I'd prefer something like an Audi S3; I know they're not as good a driver's car as a scooby or an Evo, but they're a better car to own and still quick.

Scouse, you haven't said how much you want to spend if you don't get an S2000

S3 is nice, but like I discovered with the TT, if you buy a fast car the primary reason has to be that it feels fast, and drives fast. That Golf chassis is just plain rubbish, and thats the reason I got shut and bought my current motor.

The S2000 is a seriously nice car, I'd hold out for that tbh

Or perhaps an Elise?

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/list.asp?p=1&s=12

Or maybe a TVR-S?

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/list.asp?p=1&s=4

VX-220?

I also know a fella thats flogging a beautiful AC Cobra, 400 miles, 4 litre engine (small I know), for £15000.

Not sure exactly how much I want to spend. Was looking at about 16-17k.

The subaru's and evo's are just a little chav for my tastes. And I've always wanted a 2-seater.

May have to do some serious insurance digging - but that 1300 quid quote is still the best I've come up with :(

Specialist insurers are your best bet. The normal insurance companies think you're going to be tonning it down the high street every day.

What's the problem? It's a sporty 2 seater that goes like the clappers and looks the mutts nuts. OK it's got a fixed roof, but that's just more panels for the glorious mini Ferrari noise that comes out the space where the back seats to be to bounce off. Oh and evo gave it 5 stars, the S2000 gets 4. Making it the better car non?

Makes perfect sense to me.

Fair enough on the points, its a great car. But it has a fixed roof, and they are two very different cars tbh.

I'm a bit disappointed that they are focusing on the Megane now, which in 'hot' form looks shite tbh.

I can't stand elise's. They're tiny little fucking things tbh. So is the VX220. Ugh. Like go-karts, but with slightly bigger wheels.
