ha i used to dispair of this when i worked at ASDA the sheer amount of food and other dry goods they lob away is criminal, they had a bunch of christmas trees that were with the inbuilt lights but were faulty so had to throw the whole lot away (50 or so) I said to the manager why couldnt we just cut the electric cables off and donate them to a church or something I mean theres bound to be families out there too poor to have a proper tree, anyhoo he said we couldn't incase someone tried to reconnect a different electric cable and got hurt they'd sue us (same with donating food to the soup kitchens, if someone gets sick the shops more afraid of being sued than making a good impact on the community).

same with the food we threw out about 4 or 5 of those big metal cages full of multi packs of walkers crisps (these cages are about 6/7 ft high and 4 ft across) because the staff had just dumped new stock on top of old and not done what they were supposed to (which was put old stock on top) so the crisps had all gone past the date.

i used to do the waste disposal at the supermarted and man it was heart breaking to see the stuff they threw out, and they dont just throw it out they have to put it through a trash compacter so that no one can bin-dive and get it.

personally i think theyd do it if they could. but the fact is its a criminal offence to do it regardless of anyone getting ill. just the act of doing it could end up with someone being fined or sent to prison for a few months.

It's still in its original packaging so it's fine. And it's still fine to eat when it's only past its sell-by-date.

What annoyed me when i used to work at subway was the people from head office just randomly changing dates of the food.

One day you would give ham for example 72 hours, the next day you got an email saying its okay for an extra 24 hours. I mean its the same ham, whats suddenly changed over night which allows it to be OK for 24 hours longer. The amount of ham i discarded because the time limit allowed was due before they decided it can have another 24 hours is ridiculous.

I agree with what most people say about health issues and it would come back to them in a law suit, but i think something could be done to stop wasting all this food.

Something similar to those cheap shops were they say the shelf life of chocolate bars has gone and its about 10p for a mars bar.

but a chocolate bar is unlikely to become detreminental to your health after a best before date. best before just indicates it will stay in the same condition untill then, after that it might not taste the same etc but its SAFE. unless its there so long that it becomes unsafe, then its gotta be chucked.

but a piece of meat cannot last so long. test have shown it can last untill x day then it will become unsafe. therfore you have to chuck it, you cant just sell it cheaper.

You could not be more wrong.

Last time i checked, there's no food crisis in scandinavia, UK or the States.

Oh wait, this must be a new Gorbachioo "There's gonna be world war!" "Running out of oil!" or "Lil men in psaceships are invading!" theory?

Atleast Joor was interesting.

I've been working with a huge (think it's the biggest actually) international football tournament here in Gothenburg that takes place every year. And every time there are immense amounts of food (breakfast, lunch, dinner) thrown away. I always try to grab as much as I can, though.

You're such a douchebag sometimes. :p

There is no food crisis. But its starting to look like there will be. And the fact that we're not starving here is no reason to waste those minerals that make the food cheap.

According to you it's starting to look like it's gonna start raining shurikens and french fries in the year 2012 unless we all stop masturbating and go hug a tree.

Yes, i can be a douchebag, but it's reserved for very special cases :p

All these cases with retail, just the law and they can't do a thing about it. Cept maybe for clean bins for the food so bums can search those :p

No, the worst is the big companies that produce food, like P&G. The amount of (for example) Pringles that gets destroyed/turned into pig food is immense. If they produce too much or had one faulty package in a few 100's, everything had to go of that batch.

And no matter how well i present my case you still cant understand the fact that this way of life isnt sustainable.

Well anyways, if you've been following the news lately you know that the depression is finding its way to Europe right now. The field of work you're in is the first one to go so you'll be seeing this very soon.

So basically (not sure if this has been said as I cba to read up, I read your's Ez and thats the one that counts!) it's the people we should blame, not the supermarkets.

I'm sure if there was no scare of being sued then they would give it away. Maybe im wrong but still

They should sign a disclaimer saying no sueage!!!!!

its not an issue of being sued its an issue of comitting a criminal offence and ending up in jail.

Very soon hmm? One year i guess? Or is this a "next month" doomsday scenario you're talking about?"

Check history of books, TV, movies, games and notice that no matter how f*cked up things get, people need entertainment. So no, i'm not worried that there's gonna be a food crisis that will make games go away.

And even if i lsot my job, i'd do something else. I'll be seeing you at the streetcorner waving that "end is nigh" sign.

You've basically covered all possible outcomes of each and every thing that MIGHT go wrong so that you can call yourself some f*cking modern age Nostradamus when something even remotely towards that happens.

Silly person "presentations" are still silly. And you, are a silly person.

He's in about 7 fields of work, so I think he'll be okay!

:p

Aye it was

Ive said before 2010. I'll stick with that for now.

And actually if you would check the history of those things you would notice that everytime something bad happens entertainment is the first thing to go. Romans had gladiators when they were rich. Renaissance was a product of increased wealth. The 20's, 60's 70's 80's and 90's all had different kinds of entertainment but the 30's and 40's had nothing because people were poor.

Perhaps you will do something else but id imagine that the next 30 years wont be very good for the IT business. So... maybe.

Being able to say that i was right all along is one of the reasons i admit, but its definately not the only one. :p

Ok. How much you willing to bet on "you being right" by 2010?

Anything, come on then, since you're so right?

And you missed the point, TV, books, entertainment in any area has always survived and been needed evne during wartimes, and poor times. And you need peolpe making them.

And don't mix IT with entertainment. Games are like movies, entertainment.

Im almost certain that by 2010 life will be much different. What exactly do you want to bet for? :p

Entertainment has never disappeared but a 90% reduction is almost the same in this case.

Only place where a 90% reduction came to play was nazi germany and the whole book burning incident.

And yes, what a nice cop out "life will change by 2010".

Hell, i'll play Gorbadamus too: "Oooooonomnomnom....by next week, world has changed!"

You say we'lll be in depression, have the third world war and have run out of oil in the next five years. Bit of a difference in that and "life will change".

And about what you want to bet for, anything, but you need some spesific details on HOW we're gonna be living different. Changes etc.
