Anybody in that ship is going to hell.

they're going to test it somewhere though. I predict a large sphere of earth dissapearing and demons pouring forth from the event horizon :eek7:

seriously though, that would rock if it worked. I just hate people talking of other dimentions and things dissapearing and stuff. it makes me itch :/

Wasn't the engine of the Event Horizon powered by a similar principle. We all know what happened there :)

Well, unless you haven't seen the film.

Sounds great, but it's definitely rewriting the rule book if its true; in accepted physics, electromagnetism and gravitation have nothing directly to do with each other, so this seems odd.

The MRI scanner at work has a magnetic field in the region of 30,000 times stronger than that of the Earth, (1.5 tesla) and that doesn't move very fast at all, and definitely stays well within this dimension!

You're deluding yourself, its used for hypersonic space travel, to send the ill bits of people to a far away dimension.

iirc the strongest field thats been produced on earth so far is 5 tesla, and that didnt move at all.
Theres a good thread on SA forums where alsorts of physic-ee people have piped up about how its a shit theory and wont work, but nasa basicly have to fund atleast the initial tests incase it does work and they look like retards for missing such a great opportunity.

edit: what happens if the speed of light in this other dimension (which ofc we have no solid proof there even are other dimensions) is acctually slower than the SoL in this dimension?

They should wait till we have a facilty on Mars to test things like this out, and maybe call it something like 'Delta Labs' THat way we know a chunk of the Earth won't go missing or we aren't guna need a containment area incase some other dimension beings decide to turn us into Zombies.

You're forgetting the main point though. With all our years of training against other dimensional beings (Half Life, Doom), gamers will survive and rule the fucking planet!!! ;)

Seriously, go watch Robotech, it has an identical plotline to what teedles stated.

A new engine is developed that can "shift" or whatever its called, I forget, it all goes horribly wrong, the ship gets teleported along with a huge wadge of the earth, and we have to fight off aliens trying to capture earth.

And some dorky 16 year old kid owns the place up in a mecha.

and then realise, when you need to reload, that you have no idea how to operate an actual shotgun.

I can't imagine it's that difficult. Aiming however, may be less easy than people expect.

(except it's not, it's piss easy.)

You'll probably just get given a crowbar, or a knife and have to explore the base looking for a better gun! :D

Blimey!

This isn't going to work... Anything that sounds that good and exciting is just bound to not work..

But! if it did... wow!

(I call dibs on any planets that might be round Wolf 359)

When they finally do get one built, I would imagine a long time from now, they will flick the switch and it'll go nowhere....or blow to bits :)

Also, if a large enough magnetic field was created, the craft would slip into a different dimension, where the speed of light is faster, allowing incredible speeds to be reached. Switching off the magnetic field would result in the engine reappearing in our current dimension.

How big does this magnetic field need to be exactly?

If its too big won't it stop the world spinning and we would all fall off ?

Also how can the speed of light be faster in this other dimension?
Who went there and measured it?

I think they would be better off developing a warp engine and phasers and stuff

I dont think living tissue could with stand the extreme pressure traving at the speed of light, and heat also would be a problem.

I dont think man will ever leave our galaxy its 100,000 light years across so it would take 100 years at the speed of light just to get to the edge of it.

When astronomers look at diffrent solar systems its not in realtime...the solar system there looking at could of died 100s 1000s or billions years ago.(no planning ahead)

Looking for intelligent life on other planets is a bad idea as we can not get along with people of our own planet.

Well thanks for that brilliant insight. Doctor Hawking is it?

100,000 years, not 100 :p

I read the article in nature and it was a bit wishy washy, didnt really understand it, and I'm pretty skeptical of the whole thing. I just keep thinking back to hhg2g where your soul has a maximum speed of travel :( It's bad enough getting concord to new york, let alone the Bush Drive (bastard yanks) to sector ZZ9 plural Z alpha.
