NOC (network operations centre) of any medium to big company. Basicely I'm paid for sitting on my ass and watching one of the huge plasma screens from time to time. Not the most fullfilling job, but hey, you gotta do something.

Best IT Money is in defence or any other area where you need DV Level security clearance.

Next is contracting with Expert level Knowledge of some system everyone wants but no body has a clue about.

But tbh I would stick with wintel stuff with some nix and knowledge of common systems, specialise in a good product if you get the chance and never turn down a job that could lead to being sponsored to DV level clearance.

Every job that can be done through a wire will be done in India or China in 5-10 years for less money and with better quality

So be a consultant and sell outsourcing

Like me :>

Not paying great, but the compagny car makes up for 5300 EUR a month :p

Other then that network engeneer/consultant pays best and is most fun

Things like systemengeneer (design infrastructures based on Windows / Unix) is fun too. Managing systems is kinda boring in the end and usually means long hours

Being SAP or whatever application consultant is very nice cash but boring as hell (imo)

If been programmer as well and thats what i really love to do but it is usually not as much cash as the other jobs.

According to the national unemplyment agency(or whateverthef*ck it's called there) i'm an IT expert and i design games for a living :eek7:

It can pay up to 50k a month.

Edit: That's old money though...lemme recalculate that...somewhere round 8k.

The second one is dangerous as if the tech is no longer needed you will find it very difficult to work, i've had a number of mates who used to earn stupid money (60 to 100 an hour) doing specialist work and who haven't worked for years and had to retrain and take minimum wage jobs.

Best paid IT based jobs are still probably in development, although support can pay well if you get the right skillbase. Networking pays pretty well these days. Industry is most important, all jobs will vary enormously in terms of cash depending on the industry.

Personally i wouldn't aim to get skills based on salary as that will always be changing (certainly there isn't stupid money being paid in IT these days like there was 5 - 10 years ago) pick something you like and have a natural aptitude for and give it a go.

And best of all become good at what you do. Personally i wouldn't reccomend general wintel support if you are after cash, it's averagely paid. Database and development are where the money seems to be at the moment. I'd look at career progression too when looking into this.

development or consultancy
alternatively contracting, but this is a risky business as work isnt constant and if you dont have financial security.

Databases seem to be the "in" thing atm, so might be in your interest to learn SQL and Oracle (its not hard) as well as database theory so you make descent systems

Unfortunately for the best money you need to go abroad as there isnt really as much development going on in the UK as there used to be :< (Assuming your from the uk), depsite what people are saying here from the pov of someone who has been browsing jobs rescently there arent many well paid placements atm, pleanty of average jobs (around the 35-40k mark) so i wouldnt go chasing the money as said very sensibly above.
Find something you will enjoy and are good at then stick with it

My advice is start working for free while you are training so you can build up experience, when you leave your degree it is very difficult to get any job, let alone one with progression nowdays

Fun >>> Salary. I work in IT and I hate my job with a passion, but it pays well and right now I can't afford to take a salary cut to retrain or whatever. I could be working in the wrong area of IT I guess or it could just be the company. Either way, no-one seems to even be bothered to reply to my applications and CV and suchlike, even agencies :p

If it keeps up like this, I shall be back working in Maplin like I did when I was doing my degree...that was fun, even though the pay sucked balls!

That would be 1st line support and yeah it`s boring but you have to do that to get to 2nd or 3rd line when it starts getting interesting. I'm an IT consultant supporting 50 sites worldwide everything from pc's and laptops to citrix and oracle, not saying everyone would enjoy it but me and a lot of my friends do :)

Stick it out for a few years and make it to 3rd line/Admin then the noobs calling are the 1st and 2nd line support bods :p

TBh get more money now from being a competent tradesmen. Bonus is the amount of shit tradesmen is very high so do a good job and you will rake it in (1 grand a week is common if your good)

Variety of work is also very good, and the variety keeps it interesting.

Oracle DBA/Performance expert
Then strut around in a crushed velvet suit whilst low down dirty developers beg you for permissions to be added to a database

Or randomnly rip out their sections of code and scream
"who wrote this overblown piece of shit package that does 12 full table scans!!!!???"

Have the low down code monkey fear you

Good money too

support aint fun when the muppet in the other end is a complete noob, thats what i mostly encounter. clueless teachers (actually yes :p) who dont know annything about PCs and cry like kids when it dont work. (often i just have to tell them to turn off caps lock, when they type in their pws :D)
