check this problem out:

Got a pc standing here (Old packard Bell 500Mhz) running xp fine with 1 hd and 1 CD-RW.

I install a DVD writer as slave and boom XP refuses to boot. I pull the IDE cable out of the device and XP boots again. When i plug the DVD Writer back in, it refuses to boot :/

Is this a known problem ?

Is the DVD writer broken ? (works fine in dos)

Is the DVD writer not compatible with the mainboard ?

So many questions, so few answers :/

Looked on the net and havent found a suitable answer, please help :)

TIA

When you remove the IDE after the failed boot do you also remove the power cable?

Just thinking if your psu is failing..

Either that or could be problems with the ide controllers with such an old mobo..

I only unplugged the IDE cables, the power stayed in so the PSU can handle it...

My 2 cents it is the controller of the mobo who cant handle it :/

try to set the writer to cabe select (cs) instead of slave
