Sorry, having read my post I think it may have been me who caused the confusion over converting fat to muscle.
No ... you cant convert fat to muscle.
What I ment was that given a reasonable diet, due to his higher workload from gym/ fitness training, he will start to gain muscle mass.
However given that his calorific input remains the same his body fat will reduce as his body uses up the stored energy to try and make up for the deficit in calorie usage.
As muscle weighs more than fat his weight loss may not be as "spectacular" as he may wish.
