Webcams?

OK, so i bought a new webcam recently. but whenever i try to start it or use it (on msn) my PC reboots. whats wrong? i have updated and reinstalled the drivers at least twise.

annyone know what to do or have heard of this before? dont want teh cam to be a waste of money :x

someone mentioned a hardware conflict (?) but what part of my PC wants to beat the shit out of my poor web cam? or is it the web cam that beats the shit out of my pc

one possibility is it might be connected to a usb hub with shared power over all ports. go into device manager (right click My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager) and then go down to the Universal Serial Bus controllers section. there should be a few usb root hubs in there, right click each one and go to properties, then on to the power tab. see which the cam shows up on, and if it says for example that the hub has a total power of 500ma, make sure the cam and whatever else is sharing that hub don't exceed that total.
have seen this a lot with usb adsl modems, which would draw the whole 500ma to themselves, so if they were on a shared hub, and a mouse or something else usb powered was on there too, it'd cause similar symptoms

good guess, but no. i tried several other "holes" i got like 8 usb ports on my pc. all were the same. and the cam wasnt under USB on the device manager either. it came as Imaging devices.

otherwise, i can only suggest your GFX card drivers may need updating, and maybe DirectX, and run some Diagnostic tests...

if you have no luck with that, then your only other option is faulty hardware, borrow a friends and test out there's...

no errors, no nothing, just poof, restart. guess i got to get my old PC and test with that one

I would check your mobo drivers are up to date, then go hunting for the latest drivers for the webcam (though it sounds like you have done that). Do make sure you have totaly killed all the old webcam drivers before reinstalling the latest.

Only other thing I could add is that PC rebooting without and error can be caused by insufficient PSU, check you have a nice branded PSU (I consider 400W minimum for a modern machine running decent gfx card).

Oh and ofc, graphics card drivers are the bane of modern PCs, never exclude them from being a possible problem.

one other thing, as the pc restarts, have you disabled auto restart on error? just in case, the option can be found by doing the following:
right click my computer, properties -> advanced -> settings for startup and recovery
just take the tick off auto restart, and if it's a windows error that's occuring, it'll give you the good old blue screen of death. should give a bit of info, and also a stop code that you can look up on ms' website

Windows by default restarts your pc on a fatal error.

You can goto C:\Windows\Minidump to look at the error, but I find its usually full of a load of shit and hard to read.

You can safely disable the auto restart (and thus be able to see the blue error screen) by doing the following:

goto Control Panel and click system.
goto the advanced tab
Find Startup and Recovery and click Settings...
Under System Failure, untick the box that says automatically restart.

Next time it happens your pc won't restart, but instead you'll see a blue screen with some vague error details. You'll still have to restart your pc, but it enables you to easier see the error and might give you a clue to whats going wrong.

It's the image being processed(sp) in the webcam, its so ugleh it breaks

annyway, ill try the other option (tested the cam on my laptop and it worked there) so i guess its all the porn and viruses on my pc that makes it crash...

that's strange

try unplugging your internet and rebooting in safe mode, see if it restarts then
