Fucking Bayer saying their chemicals are "essential" because of pest pressure, but it's their chemicals that are causing the increased pest pressure.

Organic farming, companion planting, regenerative, chemical free, more calorie dense, naturally pest resistent. But we won't do it @Embattle.

Fucking twats, we are an island yet still after fucking years of complaining still suffer drought induced water restrictions. All utility companies should be forced to invest a minimum percentage of all profit back into the infrastructure or something like that. Bet the bosses don't worry about using the hosepipe to water their acres of garden.

Climate change & no infrastructure, great combo.

There's plans to build like 5 new reservoirs though (we haven't built one in 50 years?) no doubt it'll cost £300bn and get scaled down to a single paddling pool.

I mean, we could fix the fucking leaks.

We lose about 20% of our potable water through leaks. Every day that's enough water for all of Wales. If we fixed those leaks, then hosepipe bans would be incredibly rare - and we'd generally have to abstract less water from rivers year-round - leading to a healthier environment all-round.

Personally I'm happy to keep water in private hands as whilst it isn't truly competitive, funding for improvements will be easier to get when it isn't in competition with all other public services for funding.

But christ almighty we need to sort planning out. No new reservoirs for 30 odd years, and it isn't for the water companies lack of trying.

How do you think that? It's been very clear that spare cash has been going directly into the pockets of shareholders.

Not only that, exactly the same amount of spare cash that would have been the required funding.

There also can be no competition, so your idea about "competetive" is ridiculous. It's not like you're competeing from water suppliers. It's a natural monopoly - and why other countries that flirted with utilities privatisation have backed out - successfully.

You only have to look at Scottish water - which didn't privatise when England did - and they have lower bills, they're unmetered, and they perform better on all of the metrics - debt, sewage discharges, water cleanliness & environmental performance. The only thing England is equal on is the amount of shit in our drinking water is about the same.

I'm going to need to see some evidence for your proclamations on Scottish Water, as a lot of what I've seen suggests they perform worse than England in all of those.

Similar to Wales though, which is run on a not for profit basis.

And why do I think water will get more investment when privately owned? Simples. When it's privately owned that company's sole focus is on the water system, and they have access to funding not available in the public sector.

When in public hands, it's competing for finding with the NHS, Social Care, transportation, schools, and all the other things funded out of the public purse.

Also a great fact filled thread on X if you want to see where things actually are, rather than where the Guardian, the Green Party and Feargal Sharkey think we actually are..

Just remembered something when I saw this thread. Outside my brother's property is his stopcock. It has been leaking enough water that there is a river of water flowing down the road. He spoke to his water company about a month ago and the plan of action - they will attend to the leak sometime in October (cannot remember the date).

Is there not a number/website you can report the water company for wasting water and money.

The flow is that strong that the cover does not sit properly on the hole. Cunts.

There is one to the entrance of the village, on a blind bend. It was reported months ago. It needs to be fixed before it gets cold, or it will be sheet ice.

I've complained to several councils about things like that, I see them regularly while out cycling. I can remember their locations off my head.

Street View · Google Maps - happening for years. Might be field runoff, but even still, it'll ice in winter.

These are all in a small area, just imagine how much water gets lost around the country from crap like this. And this complaint doesn't even include the nutrients being washed out of those fields straight into the drains.

Saw my brother today and it so happens that several residents along the street have complained to the water company, it had an effect the twats are coming out tomorrow now instead of October and yes it is still gushing out.
