Ok, lets verify that. Do you have a Digicam or Cellphone cam? We can do a little experiment here.

Dude, did you even read the article? This is about a solar dryer. They are talking about an air temperature of 58° not water. Air has a considerably lower thermal capacity than water wich means it can not store or transfer heat as effective as water can.
Beside that you'd get serious circulatory trouble after a short time at that air temperature as your body will try to keep your skin from scalding by carrying the heat deeper into your system.
Hmm, as I read it the fact that "A child cannot be scolded by hot water at 58°C. 64°C and you can feel the burn" is taken out of context to point out that it's safe.
And no, I didn’t read 100% of what’s in that article.

UPDATE: Bah, Outlander beat me to it :)

Tris, I dont believe your boiler is heating water to 60 degrees, since you have ignored every request to measure it, I can only assume I am correct. :p

did the government measure everyones water temp? no, but they can claim its 60oC for everyone to kill bacteria. why do i need to prove it then? :p

but believe me, if i had a thermometer id measure it. but im an unemployed student and cant afford to go out and buy a thermometer just for this.

I was merely pointing to the part in his link that he gets the water temperature, that you stated was air temperature. I dont give a shit about if its correct or not :)
the whole debate is silly imo :)

While not wanting to speak for Tris, if he has a combi boiler, which it sounds like, he will be able to set whatever temperature he wants the water heated to while in the boiler, which is how mine operates.
I have my central heating set to 80 deg and my hot water to 60 deg, they are the recommended temperature settings according to the manufacturer.

The cold water tap is turned off to my shower because as the shower starts, the rate at which the water comes through the boiler means it doesn't heat it fast enough to come through at 60 deg.
However, if I turn the hot tap on to run a bath, that is exactly the temperature it comes through at because the water isn't running anywhere near as fast.
If I then choose to not check my water temperature correctly before getting into the bath I am a moron and deserve to get burnt.

The issue, as I see it, isn't that Tris is wanting to protect the right for people to burn themselves, but to protect the right for people to take responsibility for their own actions and accept the consequences.

As has been said before, young children and the elderly should have other people to take those responsibilities if they are unable to do so themselves.

ye, but without pointless discussions like this i feel the forum would be full of 2 week old videos, praises to hoff and norris and people asking whats the top 10 sandwhich of all time :p

in response to cadiver, it is combi. it doesnt have heat units on but both heating and water are set to the maximum what ever that maybe. the government claims its 60 according to that link.

Ok, I admit I missed the 'hot water' there. Made a mistake. Happens when you get carried away by the heat of the moment. ;) I got a kid myself and it makes my stomach turn to read shit like that.
You know, its all relative. I bet you can bear a few drops of 58° hot water on your skin but you sure as hell will suffer 1st degree burnings if submerge your hand in the same water and keep it there for more a minute or two.

Lets put it like this: You circular system can transfer a certain amount of heat (physically it is the energy and not the temperature that matters) away from your skin. Your skin can stand a certain temperature before it will scald.
As long as the amount of thermal energy added to your skin by the water is lower or equal to the amount of energy your circular system can carry away the temerature of your skin will efectively not increase.
If it is higher your skin temperature will rise. The temperature will ofc raise the faster the higher the difference between the energy added and the energy taken away is.
If the temperature raise is slow your nerves have time to signal your brain whats going on and you will get a warning manifesting in more or less intense pain.
If the temperature raise is steep your skin will suffer damage and the thermal receptors in it will lose functionality before they can send the message. In that case the energy transfer will continue until deeper layers of tissue have accumulated enough heat to trigger pain.

So I guess what they mean is that a child cant be scalded by 58°C hot water cause it will start screaming like hell the moment you put it in there.

A little example to point out what I mean: Back in my moms house they have an oldstyle cental heating fired with coal or wood. I went down there once to light it. The fire was out so I opened the door to remove the ash from the fireplace. After I did that I saw that the embers where still glowing and radiating quite a bit of heat. Then I thought "Hey, that door must have been hot!" That was about 2 seconds after I opened the door and the instant I finished that thought pain hit me.
I had a nice imprint of the door knob on the tips of my thumb and index finger for a couple of weeks.

aslo tis why folks test warm babys milk on there wrists, cos it gives a better indication on temperature. I used to always test bath water with my hands and ofc it didnt seem that bad :p then feet went in hmm a lil bit warmer, then as soon as ankles and rest of body touched it it was like wtf LAVA! :)

Aye I know :( That's unfortunately the place this argument falls down. But I still think it's dumb that people (ie read those in Government) are forever trying to tell people what they can and cannot do when it comes to stupid things that they should be taking their own responsibility for.

But, while the Government is off introducing the 'nanny state', we have a collapsing NSH, we have children leaving school who cannot read and write properly, we have an absolutely horrendously bad public transport system, we have a social services care system which frequently breaks down etc.

Well, as I don't have any spuds to cook, that probably explains why I like a nice hot bath to soak in :)

tbh, this sounds on par with the woman who sued macdonalds because she spilt coffee over herself and it was *gasp* hot!

There's gotta be a certain amount of self responsiblity involved with keeping yourself safe, seriously. Some things just go a little too far. May as well walk around wearing suits made of cotton wool balls at this rate.

Admittedly kids who's parents are stupid enough not to test the water before jumping straight into the bath have a rough deal, but everyone who's capable of running a bath themselves ought to know better.

Hehe, I think us girlies just have a higher pain/heat threshold, it is entirely possible it comes from being able to deal with demons and devils yus

Btw....not only do I think this is useless. Also think of the costs to get that through. And if you want to have that taken seriously, you will have to make controls and who pays them? Right.....YOU!

Generally I couldn't care less cause I live in Germany (;)), but imho the responsible politicians should spend their time with less useless stuff. What next? Coffee only to be served warm? Ovens not allowed to heat anymore cause you can burn yourself? (Yes, I burned my mouth on baguettes more than once and it was my own stupidity and I admit it, HA! =) )

Did you read the line saying it has little chance of sucess anyway?

harsh but fair.

Hmm, doesn’t water boil at 100C and not 60C? Guess you could boil water at 60C, but not at the pressure we walk around in. Guess it’s to get their point thru with some dramatically words etc.

Water boils at lower temperatures if in lower preassure - the higher up you are the less energy needed to bring it to the boil. Iirc, at the himalayan peaks you can boil water at 60c. The water will still obviously only be 60c though, so this complicates cooking food at extreme altitudes since the water will vaporize before your food is cooked.
Same thing in space - if an unrprotected body was to take a spacewalk various fluids in his less protected organs (eyes, shallow blood vessels, lungs if he didnt empty them of air etc) would start to boil because of his bodyheat. It wouldnt be immedietly fatal since the heat would not be more than what his body generated, but the rapid vibration of fluids would not be good and would cause swellings etc, bursting bloodvessels (the extreme cold outside of his body would kill him fast though :m00: ).
