I used to play Warhammer/40k about 5 years ago, and almost got back into it this summer but was introduced to another game at the local game club: Confrontation, by the french company Rackham. It just beats GW games in all aspects - much more tactical play, much more balance, less costly (its a skirmish game so you only need 5-20 models for a complete army, although everything is in metal), and the figures are widely accepted as the most detailed and good looking sculpts on the minature gaming market. A joy to paint when you like the artistic side of it, which i do.

Take a look for yourselves :)

The GMs seemed real nice as well, very helpful. :worthy:

What did GOA think of it all? (Xalin etc (if your reading this)

Did you buy anything? :)

I found the interface was very similar to WoW, but apparently they are working on a new, better interface (maybe Xalin can confirm?) The graphics however seemed much more daocy, i.e. much more realistic than cartoony, which I liked.

You've also got to remember that this is still in Alpha. Most likely they're just putting bog-standard interface controls while they focus on the gameplay, and then change stuff later if its appropriate.

And I bought the Orc and Goblin army :D

Waaaaaargh!

Yeah, totally agree... but for a demo - everyone was stood there comparing it to WoW (which is understandable) - made me laugh, when we had a chat with one of the guys there (Jeremy)... we ended up asking abouts bots etc... he said "if you need a 2nd account to play the game and compete - then we have failed in what we set out to do" - fair play :D

The Orc and Goblin army! Nice! did you happen to get the Squig herder? :D

heres a pic:

I got Skull pass, as I've recently got back into Warhammer again :D

Just wondering about the comparisons to WoW.

I actually found the WoW interface one of the better things about the game to be honest...

would it be bad for anyone if WAR's interface was similar? what do you guys think?

Personally, i think it would be fine.

I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed meeting some of you guys. I wish I had more time to talk to you but as you will have seen it was VERY hectic.

I tried (building a Lizardmen army) but by the time I got 10 minutes away from our stand it was all sold out. :(

Yeah, guilty as charged. That's a nice way of saying it though ;)

Yep we got told the same. Basicly the current interface is there to allow you to play it but we have to keep in mind that this is an Alpha version of the game which means a lot will change before the release.

We like to describe it as "exagerated but detailed" which also goes for the Warhammer look in general which is obviously what we're aiming for.

Ah /wave, thought is was you! I did ask one of the girls there but she said she would not tell me your names! If you happen to be in the UK again, give us a shout and I'm sure we can sort something out :drink:

I think I managed to get a picture of Xalin... I'm sure I can host it somewhere :D

I am confused about this gfx same business. They really dont look the same, Wow had a more cartonish style with a more vibrant (Garish) colour pallette.

yes a dwarf is a dwarf, both stocky creatures, but thats about it.

The skins (textures) of the Warhammer chars are very nicely drawn.

I said similar... as in I was 5 feet away ;)
they do look alike, I'll check the copyright but I'm pretty sure I've a photo of my mate playing and we checked this morning - there are similarities (sp?)

The world he was in was, I must say, a lot better and graphically richer than WoW - but the character did have that same stupid woddle from WoW :)

I totally agree its at an alpha stage or whatever, but I was in a queue with many others who had all been saying the same.

WoW has 7million sub's - is comparing it to that a bad thing at this stage? :)

Was fun. Just about recognised Xalin from the Pryd meet a few years ago but he buggered off for a break when I got round to queing at the booth xD. Not really bothered to much on the WoW comparisons but one wow'ish thing that was missing in the alpha was a quest NPC marker on your mini map.

You blagged an hour of playtime by standing in line 6 times.

Worst, blag, ever!

Hehe - even I wasn't that dedicated (read: sad)!

Although I got giddily excited when I got to play, and even more so when I got my t-shirt.

You wouldn't think I was 24 :(

Well it must have been over an hour then as I got a good 15 mins at the end too.
Lunch+stay behind was the best blag of the day :D

Intrestingly apparently you will be able to fight your own sides other races in some instances. Dak elf vs Chaos .. Dorf vs High elf etc

Makes sense though, there are no true allies in the warhammer world and no true faction lines drawn up, just alliances of convenience. The "evil" races fight each other as much as they fight the "good" races and the dwarfs and elves have ancient grudges towards each other etc etc.

Don't remember seeing you there tilda, but it was pretty damn busy :)

I would of stayed for alot longer if it wasn't for the massive queue, which didn't die down at any one point

Mark (davis i think - dep content designer) from Mythic was there, and he did say to me that on their internal servers the UI is completely different, so looking forward to seeing what that will be like.

Goblin jumping is BLOODY AWESOME! Its like the goblin is throwing himself in the air, classic.

Graphics wise, I didn't actually think they were much like WoW. It was cartoon style, but it was realistic and detailed, if that makes sense. When you play it, you will get a feel for it i'm sure. The pictures don't really do it justice.

Unfortunatly as it was so busy, we only got about 10-15 minutes to try it out, but it was just enough to get a feel for it. Combat actually felt really good speed. Watching videos it looked kinda slow, but it plays really well atm.

I had hoped to have seen more people from Mythic there, but I think it was just Mark and Adam. (no offence to the goa people ofc, but I was mainly hoping to poke Richard in the ribs for spamming too much on irc lol).

I had planned to take a video cam, but unfortunatly forgot it so no damn vid from me gah :x

Anyhow, it looks good so far, so thumbs up from me :D

I used to like watching the Warhammer table-top battles in the Games Workshop stores, although we always preferred WFRP (Shadow over Bogenhafen rocked)
