BW news has mentioned the free trial of the only MMOG historical FPS simulation game out there - World War II Online. I've been playing this game since July last year and seen all the improvements, the game is a lot more stable and enjoyable now, but still a bit flaky and demands a high spec PC (min RAM 512k).

WWIIOL differs from the other MMOGs in that there is no "point and click" statistics crunching used to hit and damage an opponent, your "avatar" has no characteristics or skills that influence play, only your performance statistics are accumulated and you are rewarded with a "rank". Skill is totally determined by player ability, its a "twitch" game.

The game is entirely team-based player versus player (PvP), there is no friendly fire and griefing tactics are kept to a minimum.

Its a true FPS style of play, with accurate historical vehicle modelling, don't expect to bunny-hop across 1940 France picking up health packs and quad damage, in most ways it is closer to Action Quake (et al.).

Gameplay is CTF style with only two "teams" (Axis and Allies), you capture bases by bumping radio tables and changing the flag colours, when you capture all the flags in a town it becomes yours, specific flags give spawn rights in the town.

Choice of vehicle range from the humble infantryman to tanks, planes, boats, anti-tank guns and the mundane truck. Cooperation is a key element, especially considering infantry and ATGs take ages to get anywhere and need transport. Only infantry can capture flags, so whilst they are the "weakest" unit they are the most necessary.

If you are serious about trying this out, I can arrange to give you a run through in-game or put you in touch with someone who can. I play on the Axis side with my squad (clan) 116th Panzer Division "Windhund", a jolly good bunch of chappies, a lot of whom come from europe.

Yes, which I am currently enjoying immensly.

First of all I'm shocked someone read the news :)

Second, thanks for the offer of some help but I don't think I could bring myself to fratinise with the Axis ;)

Also, after my 25th crash landing I thnk I'm getting the hang of flying the hurricane. Beware my powers of laying tracer fire all over the sky..... I must be hitting something, surely.
