Haven't capped it, Never found a work around, lots of people I know have the same problem. I have a 10Mb connection with Virgin (wired) and Steam will always download at a constant 1.1mb sometimes going up to 1.4mb. Tried changing location, opening all the ports Steam asked for on my PC and the Router. Always been that way through 2 or 3 pcs and routers

You won't get more than 1.2 (or there abouts) MBps on a 10Mbps line. Bits and Bytes :)

This explains it

broadband - Why is my speed only limited to 12% of my max bandwidth? - Super User

To achieve 10MBps you would need an 80Mps line.

LOL, PLightstar, you n00b :)

You are actually getting a faster connection than you are paying for if you are getting speeds of 1.4megs

Noob ok?

But I doubt I would be getting more than I pay for. Knowing Virgin.

I wish I could get Virgin internet. Up to a year ago it was BT or nothing for me, though I have now moved over to sky (as soon as it was available)

I was on around 600k this time last year, jumped to 3.5 with sky. They sent an engineer to fix the line with-in a week of signing up with them, that I had been trying get BT to fix for 2 years. Funnily enough it was a BT open reach engineer.

I'm moving soon, to what I think is an area that doesn't carry Virgin.

No idea what I'll do, need good reliable speeds and not too much throttling and no nanny state ISPs like BT :(

Really can't fault sky so far. Decent customer services, foreign but they actually speak English...unlike BT who have foreign customer services with a very basic grasp of English.

I have the full package with them, TV, phone, internet.

Sky - although your actual speed will depend upon your line and exchange etc, they have not once throttled me. Something Virgin did daily. Yes I only get the quarter of the speed on sky as opposed to Virgin, but I get that speed consistently.

Cool, cheers - I'll take a look at Sky, as I'll want the Sports channels too. I just hope the landlords allow an ugly dish. :)

I usually get 2.1mb/s which is around my cap - if I'm not getting that I switch to another country in the settings, Belgium or Germany or somewhere, until I find one that gives me max speed

Unless it specifically says not to in your tenancy agreement, then you don't have to. Just check with your agent if you are worried.

Oh and they wouldn't be able to keep your security deposit for that anyway, tenants are protected under the new regulations. At worst he could maybe try and charge you for repairing the holes left in the wall after taking the dish down. Which you could yourself and prevent him claiming anything.

Unless it's a block of flats that bans dish's then I haven't met a landlord who'd care.

ive had good experiences and bad with steam

bad in that the game that i spent 9 hours downloading didnt freaking work

good that i got a refund (though it took about 2 weeks for them to reply to my angry message)

the main downside being the "right here/now" problem, i quite like having physical copies of games as if i have a quick flash of interest i can just install and play (well some newer games take hours to install but in an ideal world...) whereas i find steam can be a bit slow (hours to download, then an age to install, then update blah)

and the stupid pop up thingy "Access the Steam community by pressing shift tab!" grrrrrrr

apart from that its kinda neat :)

Those stupid pop-ups that you can disable very simply... yeah so annoying!

Hours to download? I've only had problems on sale days that are also public holidays. Otherwise I get my full bandwidth being used.

So far the main gripes with steam seem to be user error related rather than program related....

Tremendously handy for the web browser you can get through the overlay. Nice to use if a game doesn't like to be alt-tabbed. Plus, you can always disable the overlay in the game properties.

never had any prob with steam
its either user-problem or 3rd party shit, GFWL being the main one, but thats hardly Steams fault.
its not intrusive really, the overaly isnt a problem, and its got a small footprint itself.
Plus i tend to lose cd/dvds so being able to re-DL stuff is rather useful

I backup all mine to DVD anyway so if I did have a HD crash or something it would be a problem. When I cba I will get an external HD to do but I just haven't got around to it.

Only problems ive had with steam is the price of the games , GFWL on the other hand needed to be installed about 6 times before it would work properly but since then its been fine.

It's most likely to be this, since the place looks like this:

Don't they usually have communal dishes on blocks of flats? If not it maybe worth enquiring with the building manager as to whether they plan on getting it any time soon.

Yes, quite possibly.

I'll be finding all of this out the day I get the keys. Need net and footballs!

I'd be very surprised if they didn't have a communal dish, because there I'd no way that kind of place will let you install your own. If they don't; well you're screwed really!

I hope that's not a professional picture to advertise the properties - the horizon is shockingly off-kilter. :\

No, it was just grabbed from a random google image search, the website for the site is linked underneath.
